I tutor general computer skills - both Mac and Windows, although I specialize in Apple products. I also specialize in digital imaging, photography, Photoshop, and web design fundamentals (WordPress in particular). I am a good instructor for an older student as well as a person who wants to improve their skills but may be embarrassed to ask, since I have experience with the technophobic. I work with a lot of small, often women-owned businesses who want help with all aspects of running a business including social media, preparing materials for clients, using online newsletters (Constant Contact, Mail Chimp), accounting in Quicken, general business strategies, and refining a brand.

If you're looking for a general computer orientation - naming conventions (important when learning to ask the right questions) or fundamentals plus on major applications (Microsoft, Adobe, etc), I am happy to tutor you on those subjects. I have in-depth knowledge of most popular applications, and of iPhones and iPads and using iCloud synchronization effectively.

I'm a Cambridge based photographer who is well versed in all aspects of 35 mm film and digital photography as well as photo editing and post-processing using Photoshop. If it's related to digital images, photography or photo editing, Photoshop, or computer skills for these or other software programs, feel free to ask me a question.

I love images and the magic that is photography and I enjoy teaching photography techniques, skills and concepts. I also teach digital scanning and restoration.

A lot is said by striving for and getting good feedback. I thank all of you who have taken the time to give me positive feedback. For others, if you're reading this far, feel free to take a look at my feedback.

Thank you,
Cynthia

Subjects

Art

Adobe Photoshop,

Adobe Photoshop

From Elements to Photoshop CC, I will introduce you to the functions and concepts behind the Photoshop phenomenon! If you have never used it, it is as interesting as you may have heard. If you know the fundamentals, I can help you use some of the more advanced features of the program like working with layers, basics of color spaces and outputs for web and print, understanding the workspace, embedding watermarks and using filters for creative and functional enhancement of your images.
Photography

Photography

Learning photography is partly learning that it is combination of art and science and working to understand those qualities and how they work together. It's a really rewarding skill to have. It's very satisfying to have the confidence to go to an event, a family gathering, a wedding or birthday party and know that the photos you take can be offered to be shared with others. The art is is in learning about the 4 c's of photography - color, composition, cropping and creativity. The science is in learning about the math that governs shutter speeds and apertures as well as something about the properties of light. Did you know that light has a color temperature and that it is measured in degrees of Kelvin? That's why photos taken indoors in florescent light have a greenish cast - they are a different color temperature (a cooler one) than those taken outdoors. As for my background, I started as a photojournalist right out of high school, working for a newspaper well before there were digital cameras. We spent more time in the darkroom than we did taking the assignments. I still prefer the quality and properties of film to even the best digital cameras but I use both. I have a degree in art. I use Photoshop on a daily basis for editing and try to keep my image manipulation limited to what I could do in a darkroom, otherwise I label it as photo art rather than photography. I'm a teeny bit of a purist that way. I'm very comfortable with technology, both Mac and PC platforms and am also comfortable with color work flow (that's working with an image from camera to printer and getting consistent results). I like natural lighting and environmental portraits (people in their natural environment) and musicians are a favorite subject of mine. I live and work in Cambridge, MA.

Business

Microsoft PowerPoint,

Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint is a great presentation tool when used well. You can also use it as a reporting tool when a traditional written report is not necessarily required. PowerPoint can include graphics, photos, text, charts and graphs among other media. The skills required are a bit of a combination of word processing (understanding fonts, text styles and document elements) with a bit of graphic design (using photos, incorporating color schemes and branding elements) and some personal creativity. There are some good basic rules to follow when constructing PowerPoint presentations, and some good "rules are made to be broken" advice can be incorporated too!
Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

Even though the look of Microsoft Word has changed over the years, its basic functions have not. Still the preferred choice of document creators and letter writers, Word also has features that allow for multi-user editing and comments, as well as the ability to insert various media like photographs and active web links. I tutor in beginning to intermediate levels on this topic.

Desktop Publishing,

Desktop Publishing

Traditional desktop publishing software, email marketing software and creating photo books all require the same sets of skills and knowledge fundamentals - working with images, using typography and managing and understanding layouts. Constant Contact, Mail Chimp, Microsoft Publisher, Apple Photo Books and Blurb (to name just a few) all require some knowledge of these three components in order create successful projects. It's the details that matter here! If you have your content in mind, you can create projects using these platforms for your personal or business marketing use.
General Computer,

General Computer

I have over 15 years' experience teaching general computer skills. I've worked teaching technical skills to adults with disabilities, to teenagers, to seniors and to technophobes (those just a little wary of technology but who want to learn). I built my first computer (from scratch) in 1993 and have had a passion for technology ever since!
Macintosh,

Macintosh

Whether you are moving from Windows to Mac, or just aren't the type of person to go to the Apple store for help, I can work with you to help you love and appreciate your Mac and get the most out of it. It is an intuitive system, but if you aren't familiar with it, the navigation and logic can be a bit puzzling! I am a firm believer in learning terminology first (in order to ask questions the "right" way) and then going on to customizing lessons so you can quickly learn what is most important to you.

Microsoft Windows

I've been teaching the Windows operating system since Windows 95, and command line MS-DOS before that. I've worked with all of the 90's Windows systems, NT (as a server/network and desktop system), ME, XP, Vista and Windows 7. I have certification in GIS which by its nature involves some Windows networking management. Additionally I have experience teaching Microsoft Office for Windows as well as the Adobe Suite of application for this OS.
