I've tutored a wide variety of students from 4th grade to Ph.D. level in many math and science disciplines. I've also co-led several writers' workshops, and I'm a professional writer and editor of math and science textbooks. My educational background is in biochemical engineering. I received a full academic scholarship to Penn State and an NSF fellowship to MIT for graduate school. I'm certified to teach chemistry in Massachusetts, and I've won a national writing award for my work.
My tutoring style is informal and fun but rigorous. When tutoring science, I usually emphasize imagination and visualization. Thinking about and "seeing" what molecules are doing never hurts and often helps. When tutoring math, I usually explore different problem solving techniques with the student until we find the ones that work best for him or her. When tutoring writing, I usually focus on clarity, finding your voice, and suitability for the intended audience. Scientists, mathematicians, and writers often doodle and draw cartoons in their work. Students should do the same to help them through the learning process.
I've helped teacher candidates prepare for the Massachusetts Tests for Education Licensure--the MTEL--in Biology, Chemistry, General Science, and Physics. I've also worked with new teachers to develop their course material and understand the finer points of their science discipline during their first year in the classroom.

Possibly the best tutor around the Boston area
Marc has been, unfailingly, the most wonderful, generous, intelligent, and patient tutor we ever could have hoped for. My granddaughter had recently been diagnosed with ADHD and, although she has very high intelligence, was doing badly in math and other courses. Marc took her on, and she was happy, HAPPY, to spend 2 full hours twice a week drilling over Algebra 1 and 2 in preparation for her going into a small, exclusive private school--where, we can only hope, she will have teacher/tutors who are any where near as good as Marc has been.Kathleen, 25 lessons with Marc
I struggle with basic mathematics. He was able to help me figure out how to do basic college mathematics. He is very knowledgeable and is good at showing someone how to do math where they can figure the problems and use these skills in the future.Brian, 14 lessons with Marc
Marc is a great tutor. He is extremely well prepared (and does not charge for the time he puts into prep). He is patient and explains things clearly. He has tutored both of our sons. Our oldest one went from low 600s to 740 on his SAT math test thanks to Marc.Pattie, 18 lessons with Marc
Marc was excellent. I haven't taken a math course in years, and Marc was very patient and understanding. He did a good job explaining mathematics (statistics in particular) in a simple and transparent way.Joel, 3 lessons with Marc
Marc is a Gifted and Adaptable Teacher
Marc is a truly gifted teacher who is patient and calm and not only knows the material incredibly well, but also has a great teaching style and the ability to present material in different ways until he hits on one that works. Marc's rare ability to read his student and adapt his teaching style was really amazing to watch. Marc has a wonderful calm manner and he teaches the material AND learning strategies to instill both knowledge and confidence. He easily taught our son material that stumped two other AP Chemistry tutors and helped him move from a D+ in the first quarter to a B+ on his midterm one quarter later, to scoring a 4 on the AP exam. He worked his magic again helping to review first semester of college calculus and get our son confident and ready for the second semester over winter break. THANKS MARC!Marla, 30 lessons with Marc
Keeps up to date on university curriculum, extremely patient.
I have been meeting with Marc for 4 weeks now, and thanks to his help my chemistry grade has moved from a D to a B. He studies the specific textbook, syllabus and any recent curriculum developments, and comes to each of my tutoring sessions so well prepared about exactly how BU is teaching the subject and how I need to approach the topic and problems. He is very patient, and is excellent at detecting when my struggle stems from misunderstanding a foundational topic. He is always willing to backtrack and explain a problem in different ways until I understand. He is the best tutor in Boston.Emily, 15 lessons with Marc

Simply the Best
My experience with Marc was fantastic. As a recent graduate of Berklee College of Music, my math skills were rather rusty. After weeks of self-study for the GRE, I found myself in dire need for a helping hand. Marc gave his all towards helping me reach my full potential. He initially spent time analyzing my weaknesses, then targeted those areas with different online and offline resources. Marc was very communicative, flexible, encouraging, but also honest and realistic. He will help you find the best ways to improve, but it is up to YOU to do the work. The 3 weeks I spent with Marc led to a 5 point (or 20%) increase in my GRE score, and while I worked extremely hard for every point, I owe much of my achievement to his guidance. I would absolutely recommend Marc to anyone looking for a tutor, be it in math or any other subject he offers. Thanks Marc!Sam, 7 lessons with Marc
Marc has "filled in the gaps" in IB Chemistry and Math for my daughter who is a high school senior. His explanations are clear and concise and she enjoys working with him. I'm glad someone so bright and skilled at teaching has been available to us.Andrea, 21 lessons with Marc
My math shrink!
Marc tutored me on my GRE quantitative section review. I learned a lot from Marc, mainly to calm down (I have severe math phobia), think things through and apply ways of reasoning that are essential to answering GRE quant questions. He's very patient, extremely knowledgeable and clear. He really knows how to zero in on weak spots and devise ways to strengthen them through specific exercises. I've done GRE math review before, elsewhere, and Marc was definitely a much better teacher. Highly recommended for people with a deep fear of math!Sol, 6 lessons with Marc
