About Tara

I hold a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from NYU, a B.A. from Penn, and have four years of classroom experience at the college level, together with two years of experience tutoring high school and college students. I tutor because I love seeing students get the help they need to produce their finest academic work. As I've taken a step back from full-time teaching and research this year to focus on my family, tutoring lets me teach in a way that suits both my and my students' needs.

As a tutor of writing, I work with students to develop their narrative voice and to then refine
that voice through clear, crisp logic and elegant rhetoric. I place a heavy emphasis on the
brainstorming, outlining, and free-writing skills which form the basis of any mature writer’s
toolkit: the ability to get words on the page. I also make use of frequent, timed debates, to
develop the verbal reasoning skills that undergird all written argumentation. As a published author and professional editor, I am equipped to help students push through their own blocks to writing success, having pushed through those same blocks myself.

When teaching literature or the humanities more broadly, I facilitate a student-centered
engagement with the text. Rather than telling a student what I think a text means or says, I
create the ideal conditions for rigorous reading by providing historical context, checking for
comprehension, and insisting that the student take a firm stance on the text and support that
stance to the best of their ability—even if they later decide that their argument is incorrect.

I am equipped to help with English language & literature, writing, French language & literature, coaching/developmental editing (for thesis projects, etc), AP Euro, world religions (particularly Islamic culture and religion), and philosophy.

I am free weekday mornings between 8AM and 2PM, and most weekends. I will not work Saturday mornings. I will occasionally do evenings if we have an established tutoring relationship & you can come to my home.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
