About Rebecca

Hi! My name is Rebecca and I am a violist currently working on my Master's at BU's school of music. I have played viola for almost 12 years and adore it! I completed my Bachelor's at Emory University, graduating with honors in 2015 with a double major in Music Performance and Renaissance and Medieval Studies. I have taught violin and viola since 2008. I have tutored high school academia since 2010.

I love helping others--of any age--find their love for classical strings. Whether you're just starting on your instrument or if you're looking to advance, I would love to help you achieve your musical goals! I adapt to the desires of you, the student, in our approach to studying the violin and viola--no set program, I cater to your individual needs. But our time in lessons together should always be productive, energizing, and fun!

I am a working violist in the Boston area and have 12 years of experience with classical music. I have a BA in Music Performance, with 3 years study of theory and 4 years of study in music history.

My degree in Renaissance and Medieval studies lends me a unique ability to delve into the full context of the history of the world--culture, architecture, literature language development, law, philosophy, scientific discoveries and principles. I have studied French, Italian, Old English, Middle Egyptian Hieroglyphs, Latin, Greek, and Gaelic.

If you're interested in a private teacher for violin or viola (or both!) then please feel free to write to me! I am happy to find a time in both our schedules that is perfect for you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I have received a BA in music performance, which required me to have a general knowledge of music and musical instruments as well as history and theory. I have tutored violin and viola for 8 years as well as tutored music history for 5. I have coached musicians on instruments other than my own, including orchestral repertoire. I have studied classical music from the medieval all the way through the post-modern/contemporary period and have a working knowledge of each period's music theory practices.

Music History

I have tutored music history since 2011. I have studied classical music from the medieval all the way through the post-modern/contemporary period and have a working knowledge of each period's music theory practices. I have taken many courses on medieval music, baroque music, 19th century music, and music since 1945. I have a specific knowledge of Arvo Part and his tintinnabulist style music. I have also studied 19th century composers in particular depth, and the late works of Beethoven. I particularly enjoy the historical background of classical music and would love to continue to tutor in it. I have received a BA in music performance, which required me to have a general knowledge of music and musical instruments as well as history and theory.

Violin

I have taught students ranging from the ages of 5 to 19, at various levels of proficiency. I have coached musicians on instruments other than my own, including orchestral repertoire. I have played viola professionally in many orchestras in both Atlanta and Boston, in addition to winning positions at top music festivals--Brevard Music Festival in 2012 and Aspen Music Festival in 2015 and 2016. I am currently pursuing my master's in viola performance at a top school of music (BU) with plans to continue on into a doctorate.
