History (Specia Education)
University of Heidelberg (Master's)
My teaching career began in Germany/Heidelberg and an Exchange program brought me for two years to Houston, Texas. During this time I got accustomed to all cultural differences and after moving to Boston decided to stay and even became an American citizen.
Today I feel at home in both cultures and enjoy teaching bi-lingual students in all grades and abilities.
During the last 4 years I prepared several students for their future studies abroad. Learning a foreign language should always include knowledge about history, music, and all other cultural aspects. That knowledge will help any student to navigate and adapt abroad.
I have had twenty-one years of teaching experience for bi-lingual students, and I have my Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) endorsement certificate.
I am a native of Germany with good French language conversational skills.
Since I am an empty nester I am very flexible with my schedule after school days and on weekends. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
As a certified special education teacher I have 27 years of experience with instructing students with a diagnose of ADHD. Most students benefit from content that is broken down in only a few details at a time. A very structured lesson and support in organizational skills are also a big help. Very often it is a benefit to include parents in a teacher's goals and objective. Those goals should be developed after getting to know the student's anxiety level and personal needs.
For twenty-eight years I have been providing students with special needs of all grade levels the unique education they require and deserve.
Through my experience working with students and colleagues of various nationalities, I understand the fine balance between cultural integrity and integration.
As an experienced educator I value and practice the belief of mutual respect.
I have two Massachusetts certificates in special needs: PK-5 and 5-12. I have a Master's +45 and the required SEI endorsement.
I am confident my professional and life experience will be of value to any school or tutoring setting.
