Northeastern University (Mathematics)
My background includes an Honors Degree in Mathematics from Northeastern University and about 10 years of tutoring experience with students ranging from third grade all the way through adults. In particular, I currently hold a math tutoring position at Balfour Academy, a program run by Northeastern University working with students from grades 7 through 12. Additionally, I work privately with numerous students in all the Brookline Public Schools, as well as surrounding communities. I would be happy to provide a reference if desired.
I love math myself, and I get great pleasure from seeing students develop a similar love for it as they gain confidence and see progress in their work. I think this allows me to teach in a way that meets each student's individual levels of need and interest in math.
I currently have availability to work with new students. Please feel free to contact me with any questions about my experience, tutoring style, or to schedule a session. While sitting in the next room trying to be invisible while Jeff tutored my son, I could tell he is very a very good tutor. He helped my son with his algebra 2 work in which he is struggling. Jeff was very patient and seemed to have good communication with my, at times, non-communicative and sullen adolescent son. I really appreciate that Jeff is able to come to my house because my kid has a lot of homework and the less I have to take him from place to place, the more time he has to apply himself without interruption to his school work. Very satisfied!
Jeff is helping my son with geometry and the way he explains makes it easy to comprehend. He is talented, patient and funny. See him next week again.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Tutoring SAT Math and SAT Math subject tests is an area of particular longstanding expertise for me. I have 15 years of experience working with middle school and high school age students, whether it is helping them prepare to take standardized tests for the very first time or are trying to gain more knowledge and confidence to retake tests to improve their scores. I particularly enjoy preparing students on any of the SAT tests for the unique challenge of problems that look different from their daily classwork. SAT math preparation allows for creativity in my tutoring style, as well as encourages students to be creative with how they approach a variety of math concepts.
