Hi, my name is Mark and I live in Brookline. I am an experienced math tutor, having started tutoring as an undergraduate teaching assistant back in 2003-04. I have covered most of the major math subject areas, but my primary focus now is on Algebra, Statistics, and standardized test prep (PSAT, SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT).
My approach to tutoring is straightforward. After assessing your goals, we work together to identify the concepts that are causing the most difficulty. I am very patient and I would rather help you to understand one concept than try to rush through a bunch just for the sake of covering material. Only after the concept has been sufficiently grasped do we begin tackling practice problems. I believe this is the most effective way to master any material, especially math. For standardized tests, I also teach a variety of proven test-taking strategies and methods (e.g. estimation, elimination, back-solving, etc.). In between tutoring sessions, I am happy to interact via email or answer occassional questions over the phone. I can also send you additional practice questions to help you reinforce the material we have covered.
I currently tutor in Brookline and surrounding areas (I am willing to travel within 5-10 miles). I am available mainly evenings during the week or weekends anytime, but if there is another time you need to meet please let me know and I may be able to accommodate you.
Please let me know about your goals and we can determine if I am a good fit to help you achieve them. I look forward to working with you!

Mark came prepared with the problems I sent over earlier. This made the meeting productive. He also sent me homework in advance so I could utilize my week efficiently. I appreciate that he came prepared and found problems that will enable me to practice problems that I have not seen before.
My son is making great progress toward improving his Math SAT score with Mark. They work industriously for the entire 90 minutes, and Mark's explanations are clear and practical. My son has gained confidence and skill from his time with Mark this summer. I highly recommend him.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
