About Corey

My name is Corey and I have over 20 years of chess experience. As a player, I was the high school champion of Philadelphia and have won numerous tournaments in the Boston Area. As a teacher, I taught chess at the Pi Math School for three years. I have also done private lessons for students of all skill levels. I greatly enjoy working with children. I am often able to reach students better by teaching chess in a way that compares it to an existing strength. If the child already has a love for English/Writing, I can make chess relate-able. If math or science are the preference, I can tailor the lessons to work within that framework.

My chess tutoring has the possibility of opening children up to tournament chess or using its principles to help with their normal school work. I have the ability to make the game seem cool and relevant. I am a patient and understanding tutor that will work hard to determine how best my students learn and give them the greatest opportunity for success. During the day, I manage physical and logical security for Harvard Business School.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored Algebra in various settings for the last 12 years. Most recently, I have tutored prodigious elementary and middle school students at the Pi Math School in Algebra. I also have experience tutoring adults as well.

Chess

I have been playing chess actively for the lasts 22 years. I previously taught chess for the past three years at the Pi Math School. I have done group lessons as well at Parkway United Methodist Church. I am an active tournament player specializing in chess openings.

Corey is very knowledgeable about the subject of algebra. He is very patient with me as I try to reacquaint myself with algebra after being away from it for so long :-)
