About Shamoore

Currently, I am a graduate student at Boston University's School of Public Health, Global Health. I am also an alum of Boston University, Bachelor's of Science, C/O '14. I am also a part of the Gates family as a 2010 Gates Millennium Scholar. I come from a family of very strong work ethic, and take these values with me every where I go. I am extremely passionate about working outside of the United States to help design, develop, and maintain health clinics, health education programs, and more specifically any and all youth programs. This passion is something that has empowered me to help other students, peers, and especially youth. I understand the importance of a good education and how it can become dramatically more valuable when there is a mentor-like individual present. I feel that as a tutor you can't just try and be a teacher because students already have that. You have to speak with your students and understand how they function and think, from that point on adjusting the method of learning makes it easier to tutor.

I have many skills in working with and designing academic curricula, running public health seminars, and aiding in other activities for the youth programs. I'm not just science and health focused I also am a writer mostly in poetry and spoken word so I do have public speaking experience as well. In my spare time I love watching soccer and staying in shape so anything with the sport of soccer is exciting for me. Growing up and especially in my 4 years of college I was realize how much the ethics of my Caribbean heritage had in my work, how I studied and how I chose to live my life. Although it is very important to excel in academics, you also have to be open minded to life experiences or even just different subjects that could give you a different perspective. For instance, my growth in writing and spoken word not only influenced my academic writing abilities, but it allowed me to grow in my creative self. This creativity is essential in sciences and health because it helps you to think outside of the box when solving issues, or especially in my life now when I have to address youth in a manner that allows them to see the importance of sciences and health, but also make it fun and relevant to their lives.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Nutrition

I've taken 2 college level courses in Nutrition at Boston university and have taught teenagers in their science/health courses about nutrition. In addition, I work as a Youth Public Health Coordinator which requires me to develop nutrition curriculums. I believe with nutrition my best technique is using case studies and real context in order to better understand nutritional topics.

Public Speaking

In addition, my position at a youth development coordinator requires me to give many presentations to different schools as well as directors of the community health center at Brigham and Women's Hospital. I'm currently a student at the school of public health so many courses are surrounded around giving grant proposals or academic based presentations to organizations looking for employees. I've spent 2 years gathering public speaking techniques, as well as training young adults on how to use these techniques for important occasions.
