About Jessica

My passion for working as an educator comes from my own life-long love of learning. I began to excel in school when I discovered that I could learn for my own enjoyment and not because someone was making me. I was privileged to learn from passionate teachers, and have used them and their teaching styles as models for my own career as an educator.

Since graduating with my Master's from Boston College, I have worked in a variety of schools as a school counselor. I have experience working with high school students (college counseling, career planning), middle school students, and students with special needs (ADD/ADHD, Asperger's, Autism, Social/Emotional problems, Behavioral problems). While my primary role has been as counselor, part of being a counselor is also helping student succeed in their academic classes. I am more proficient in the math and sciences, however, can also provide general support in most all academic subjects. As a special education counselor, I have helped students break down assignments into manageable pieces to find success through each step. As a guidance counselor, I have extensive experience helping students choose appropriate schools, write and edit college essays, and ensure deadlines are met. I often check in on students in between tutoring sessions to ensure comprehension and time management.

I provide tutoring services in students's homes during after-school and weekend hours. I can travel throughout Boston, Brookline, Newton, Cambridge, and Somerville. While I am flexible in my scheduling, I have a 4-hour cancellation policy. My first session is typically with both the student and parent to set specific outcome goals.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you find academic success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I am a licensed counselor in the state of Massachusetts. I have 5+ years experience in working in Special Education schools. Many of my students have been diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, along with other diagnoses. I have experience helping students break down assignments into smaller pieces so that they can better focus on the task at hand. In helping students, I have provided frequent check-ins to help them remain focused and moving through the materials. These check-ins also allow me to structure breaks with the students so that they can remain focused for longer periods of time.

Career Development

Formerly, I was the Director of Guidance Counseling at a high school. The main focus of this position was to provide college counseling and career counseling to all students in grades 9-12. This began with long-term goal setting and career counseling in the 9th grade, and went through applying to colleges and for financial aide and scholarships in the 12th grade. Much of my work focused on helping students understand how skills can be applied across multiple careers.

Terrific work with college age daughter

Jessica has been helping my college-age daughter with some organizational and study skills. She's clearly experienced with ADD issues and has keen insight to areas of weakness. She is on time, knows where to focus her attention, provides regular feedback and is a calm, consistent presence. It is an added bonus that she is able to provide college-level tutoring in certain subjects.
