About Linnea

Hi! I am Linnea, and I have been playing the violin and viola for 19 years. I began teaching private lessons over 10 years ago, and it has become my greatest passion in life. I graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in Viola Performance in 2013, and am currently working towards my Masters at Boston University Where I receive a "college of fine arts scholarship award" and I work as a Teaching Assistant.

I am an energetic, highly creative, passionate, and extremely patient teacher. I love working with people of all ages, and I strive to make the learning process as interesting as possible! I am constantly changing exercises and pieces in order to keep my students alert and engaged, and to keep their minds working the entire lesson. As I get to know each student, I tailor my lessons specifically to them and their learning style, so they will learn as best as they possibly can...while still having fun. I am very good at pushing people to be their best, without being negative or harsh. It is important to me that I encourage my students to question as much as possible, so together we can help them learn how to best teach themselves. This is a skill that will carry over into almost every other aspect of their life!

Learning music can help young children with reading skills, math skills, and study skills which will help them learn faster and better in school.

I have been teaching violin, and viola privately and in group-settings for over 10 years:
-I taught first at a summer school camp for gifted children. I helped teach children aged 6 through 15 on instrumental basics, on playing effectively and cooperatively in a small orchestra, on music reading skills, and on intermediate technical skills.
-I began teaching private violin and viola lessons at the age of 16. I have had students between the ages of 4 and 60. Most of my students are beginner to intermediate level, but I also teach college level musicians, on advanced techniques and musicianship skills

When I was in high school, I decided that I wanted to study viola on a professional level:
- In 2008, I was chosen as one of top two high-school aged Violists in the state of New Jersey, and was named a "Governors School Scholar". The state sent me, free-of-charge, to a 9-day intensive music workshop.
- in 2009, I was accepted as the only violist in my year to attend Mason Gross School of the Arts Conservatory at Rutgers, and to study with the acclaimed Viola Professor, CJ Chang
- I was awarded with the position of First-Chair Viola in the Undergraduate Orchestra.
- I won the Mason Gross Undergraduate Chamber Music Competition 3 times in a row
- I was awarded the "College of Fine Arts Scholarship" at Boston University to study Viola with Michelle LaCourse
- I also received a Teaching Assistant position at Boston University

I look forward to working with you as we delve into the world of music! Music has changed my life, and I am always excited to bring music to those who want to know more about it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Violin

I just graduated from Mason Gross School of the Arts majoring in Viola/violin performance. I currently teach violin and viola at a music school in Hillsborough where I have about 20 students in addition to my private studio. I have been teaching violin and viola for over 8 years, and have played both the violin and viola for over 14 years. My method is adjusted to each student individually because each student learns in their own way. I typically start each student with a solid base in scales and etudes while we simultaneously work on small technique-building tunes in the Suzuki books. I have them learn to correlate notes and rhythms with the appropriate feelings on the instrument so they train their bodies to play what their mind wants. I am very patient, and I make sure my students learn the basics inside and out, so they can learn faster as they get older
