About Paula

I have taught in Rome, New York and Boston all subjects for elementary school, middle school and some high school. I get along with kids to young adults - I have a Master degree in Communication Disorders plus a Law degree and enjoy breaking down issues to an understandable level welcoming questions and explaining all in simple terms. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have a M.S. in Communication Disorders from Teachers' College, Columbia. I am a Speech and Language Pathologist. I worked for years with students who have ADD /ADHD. I also worked with survivors of traumatic brain injuries. I know compensatory strategies for how to handle time management, executive function, organization, processing issues and other factors that are challenging to students with ADD/ ADHD. I am very patient and calm. I have had to deal with this issue in my own family and the person has been able to excel in all undertakings, academic and other goals, so that they are leaders in their chosen fields...and very successful academically.

Classics

I have a classical education including having studied Latin for 5 years. I also speak, read and write Greek as well as Italian. I have studied many of the Greek, Latin and Italian classics and have lived in those countries. I have studied Greek plays, Latin texts, art, architecture and have always had a special love for Homer, Euripedes, Aristotle, Sophocles, Socrates and mythology. Criminal Justice

I have been a licensed attorney in Massachusetts since 1983. After law school I was an Assistant District Attorney in Norfolk County, MA where I prosecuted criminal cases. Thereafter I was a Special MA Assistant Attorney General for the Department of Labor and Industries - now the Labor department. I prosecuted case there as well as serving as a hearing officer for public bid law building contracts. I then worked in my own practice for many years handling the defense of criminal cases as well as real estate, social security and personal injury cases. Elementary (K-6th)

I am a licensed speech and language pathologist with a M.S. from Teachers' College, Columbia University. I have worked for years not only as an elementary school teacher with the Boston Public Schools but I have also founded years ago language-based classrooms in elementary schools and served as a consultant to elementary school teachers. I have a solid multi-lingual background - French, Spanish, Greek, etc..I also have a solid math and English background....

Music History

I have studied music including music history since I was in high school. I attended the Conservatory for classical opera studies on scholarship while I was at Brandeis University. I also studied Opera for over one year at the Santa Cecilia Academy of Music in Rome, Italy. As an opera singer and a musician it has been crucial for me to know the history of music. It is very easy to learn about different historical music periods especially as I have a solid footing as a performed of various genres of music. I also studied piano and have a good footing with violin music.

Phonics

I have a M.S. in Speech and Language Pathology/Communication Disorders from Teachers' College, Columbia University. Phonics is a fundamental part of the study of Speech and Language Pathology. I have worked for years providing therapy including remedial reading strategies which incorporates phonics. I organized language based classrooms in the Boston Public schools and served as a consultant to teachers which included consulting in areas having to do with phonics.

Public Speaking

I have an M.S. degree in Communication Disorders from Teachers' College, Columbia University. Prior to this I was an music/opera singer having sung in Rome at the Rome Opera House and studied at the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome where I lived for over a year. I am also a litigator. I became an attorney in 1983 and worked not only as an assistant district attorney but also as a defense attorney. I have coached people for public speaking. I have helped people get through the anxiety and voice issues to deliver effective presentations.I worked as a voice coach, having studied with president Kennedy's voice coach. Speech

I have a Master in Science from Teachers' College, Columbia University in Communication Disorders - Speech and Language Pathology. I have worked in hospitals and schools providing communication therapy to students including students who stutter. I am also a singer/musician and know multiple techniques to assist people who stutter. Breathing, singing, talking while exhaling are some tools that can help. I am not a threatening person. I also know many successful people who have achieved prominence despite their stuttering. Communication can improve! I am a licensed speech and language pathologist and a life member of American Speech, Hearing and Language Association.

Study Skills

I have a M.S. from Teachers' College, Columbia U. in Communication Disorders which includes providing therapies on executive function skills, cognitive rehabilitation, processing, organization, time management as well as other skills. I have tutored individuals who have ADD, ADHD and are survivors of traumatic brain injuries. One needs to have much patience to show them how to focus and plan ahead. Having a calendar and writing down important tests, deadlines and other assignments are basic and critical to organization and time management. Reviewing syllabi is essential. I have dealt with those time management and organizational needs with family members who have achieved phenomenal academic results including getting into illustrious colleges.
