Hello! I am a PhD student at Boston College studying curriculum and instruction. Before graduate school, I taught middle school for two years. I taught 6-8th grade social studies, Latin, and world religions and worked with individual students in grades 5-8 in all subjects.
When working with students, I try to find ways to make the material relevant and exciting based on the students' interests and goals. For summer tutoring, I help students prepare for upcoming exams such as the ISEE or SAT by building both test taking skills and strategies for mastering content in both verbal and quantitative reasoning. I am also happy to work with students in other subjects to prepare for the upcoming school year or provide some ongoing learning experiences through the summer months.
I also have a masters degree in theology and a graduate course work in teaching. My BA is from Wellesley College. I have passed the exams for teaching certification in History for middle and high school. Hello! I am a PhD student at Boston College studying curriculum and instruction. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While American History was not one of the courses that I taught while a middle school teacher, this is a subject that I really love and incorporated into some of the courses that I did teach.
I have taken a number of courses on American history, including one that focused specifically on Boston-area history. I have also read a good deal on American history independently and have visited many of the local historical sites for personal edification and enjoyment.
I have tutored students for the ISEE privately and have also taught ISEE classes to help students prepare for the Middle Level test. My experience teaching middle school Latin allows me to teach the vocabulary section of the exam using Latin and Greek roots as a basis for learning a great deal of the vocabulary. I have worked with middle school students in classes and one on one with the subjects covered by the ISEE.
I developed and taught a year-long World Religions curriculum for the 8th grade level. This curriculum includes historical and contemporary discussion of Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism as well as exploration of current issues in world religions in the U.S. and internationally. Additionally, my undergraduate minor was in religious studies and I have a masters degree in theology.
