I believe anyone (this means you!) can learn to write well and enjoy it. With more than 20 years of professional writing experience and a master's in journalism from Harvard, I know what it takes to write well, and I can teach you. That's right: YOU. I can help you conquer writer's block, say what's in your heart and mind, make yourself understood ... and get good grades. I also have a knack for explaining grammar to my students in a way that's easy to understand.

I have helped many students write college application essays that do them proud ... and make them stick out (in a good way!) in a crowd. I can also help you write your essay on "Pride and Prejudice," "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," "Wonder," "Les Miserable", "A Separate Peace," "Hiroshima," "The Hobbit," "The Meaning of Life as You See it" ... really any subject you need to tackle.

I can also help you with business and marketing writing. Need to write better memos? An advertising campaign? An annual report? I can help.

UPDATE: Starting in 2016, the SAT essay will be 50 minutes long and and summer is a great time to start preparing for it. The essay will be VERY DIFFERENT from the old one, requiring students to write a rhetorical analysis of an essay provided for them to read. I've got the scoop, and I can help you to be prepared, not scared.

Helping students get their writing assignments done on time is one of my specialties. First, I show students how a few minutes of brainstorming when they first get an assignment is a low-stress way to get their ideas on paper, get their brain to start working on the assignment, and overcome the blank page. Then, I teach students how to get started and budget their time so that they have time for revisions, the key to good writing. I help each student develop their own check list of grammar and style points, built on their writing weaknesses, teacher feedback, and the assignment requirements. How do I know how to do this? Well, I was an A student in every writing class I ever took in elementary school through AP English and college level Shakespeare etc. I have a master's in journalism from Harvard, and I've been writing for a living for 20 years. I've also taken several courses on creative writing that focus on ways to beat writer's block and get your best ideas on paper.

Knowledgeable and efficient instructor

Abby has helped me identify areas of improvement and has given me strategies and practice tips to address them. She seems to know what is expected for the SAT. She is also flexible regarding working hours, which has made our meetings very easy to schedule.

Helpful, informative, and energetic tutor

Abby helped me with putting finishing touches on my big college essay and some of my college supplements. Though I write well on my own, Abby fixed my writing and suggested details that altogether strengthened my essays and, ultimately, made my personal essay one of the best essays I have ever written. I learned new techniques that I ended up incorporating into my scholarships essays, all thanks to Abby. I can't wait to use her suggestions in my future writing!

Knowledgeable tutor

Reviewed and analyzed my son's approach to SAT questions. Discussed fact patters and how to address them. Discussed strengths and weakness of my son's approach. My son had a great experience and looking forward to more lessons.

High energy, great attitude

(This was our first session) Abby was really great with my son! He is in 2nd grade and struggles with identifying what to write, and then getting it down on paper. In fact, there are times when he completely shuts down and goes into his shell. Abby never let that happen and had him very engaged. Her energy level and joie de vivre was catching and my son is now looking forward to using some of the "wild" writing tactics she taught him! We can't wait to see her again next week. (Added 4/29/2016) - I just had my son's teacher conference, and his teacher said "He has had TREMENDOUS improvement in his writing!" We can't thank Abby enough, she has done wonders in such a short amount of time.

Abby is the best English Writing Tutor!!

Abby was teaching my son how to get a "topic sentence" from each paragraph! Abby also pointed out my son's current writing problem which is very helpful!! My son told me he did learn something from Abby's tutoring class and he wants to keep learning with Abby in the coming days!!!

Judy, 4 lessons with Abby

Knowledgable tutor

Abby helped me turn a grad school essay into a more compelling story, and reduced its links to meet the requirements of my schools. She is an excellent writer, and even taught me a few things to keep in mind in my own writing.

Abby is a patience and persevering teacher, extremely satisfied with her teaching style. We have her for both of our kids who are 16 years and 11 years and she is able to modulate her teaching style according to the stage of the student.
