About Elizabeth

I graduated from college in 2015 with a degree in Psychology and Gender Studies. My areas of focus were social psychology and sexual ethics, and I was awarded the departmental awards from both the Psychology and Gender Studies departments for my senior honors thesis. I now work in the tobacco treatment and research field and I hope to return to school to pursue my PhD in September 2018. I have experience in most areas of Psychology, including cognitive, developmental, and social psych, as well as history and theory, statistics, and research methods. My course work also includes international feminisms, cross-cultural understandings of gender and sexuality, and women's roles in the Middle East.

I have about 10 years of tutoring and teaching experience, starting as a peer tutor in junior high. In high school and college I volunteered as a tutor for recently emigrated African students, focusing on English and writing, social science, and biology. I also acted as an editor and proofreader for my peers' papers throughout college. After graduation, I spent a semester teaching English, Math, Ballet, and Art in a Kenyan boarding school. I love learning and I enjoy imparting this same love for school to my students. Due to my experience with African students, both in the US and in Kenya, I am comfortable teaching across language and cultural divides. I also have experience teaching across age groups, from elementary school to high school and college students. I am available for any kind of tutoring - from explaining concepts and working on homework to outlining and editing papers.

I have research experience both in a lab and hospital setting. My prior coursework includes cognitive, developmental, and social Psychology, research methods, statistics, and history. Whether you need help with theory, designing and evaluating a study, or understanding a particular neurological or psychological concept, we will work together to find an answer and increase your understanding of the subject matter.

I have a sharp eye for grammar and punctuation and a love of vocabulary that adds variety to papers. I love writing and believe that strong papers begin with an good outline that specifies the writer's argument, supported with concrete pieces of evidence. I'll work with students at any stage of the writing process to sharpen their argument and produce well-written and articulate papers.

I began dancing ballet when I was five years old. I was a competitive dancer throughout grammar school and high school, with experience teaching classes with elementary school students. In college, I was a choreographer for my school's dance ensemble and was in charge of choreographing routines for our campus-wide shows. After college, I taught Ballet, among other subjects, in a Kenyan boarding school. Technique is important in ballet, but passion for dance is essential. Students with any level of ability can feel comfortable that our lessons will be positive learning experiences.

I'm available for help with shorter questions and homework assignments, as well as longer papers or a continuing relationship working on a larger question. Contact me to schedule a lesson in any area!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ballet

I have 18 years of dance experience, including several years as a competitive dancer. In high school, I was an assistant dance teacher for four years, working primarily with elementary school students. I was a choreographer on my college's dance ensemble, and gained greater experience in developing and styling a dance performance. After college, I taught Ballet, among other subjects, to junior high students in a Kenyan boarding school. I can work with students in any area of Ballet, or dance in general, including developing technique, an understanding of terminology, or improving choreography skills.
