About Lucy

After receiving my Lessons in Literacy training, I have decided to share my knowledge of reading to students beyond my classroom to build confidence in struggling and early readers. The success rate of students who have been tutored through the Lessons in Literacy program is high because of the specialized skills that students develop. The strategies students obtain goes much further than what is taught in the average reading lesson. The average classroom teacher reads with students and models what she or he knows about reading in hopes the student will pick up on it. A trained teacher in Lessons in Literacy uses what the student already knows to build a specified program for each reader. Every sessions starts with building the reader's confidence to encourage an appreciation for reading. If you have a child at home that is struggling with reading and not making progress in the classroom, I would love to help out!

I taught first and second grade math under a math specialist's guidance for 3 years.

I was trained in a high ESOL population to instruct with sheltered instruction and co-taught with an ESOL teacher for 3 years. My passion lies with ESOL students because of the amount of growth that can be obtained with learning a few extra strategies.

As a classroom teacher myself, I struggle finding the time to support the students who could be more successful with just a little support in an intervention outside the whole classroom setting. I have started tutoring to help those students who may not be able to receive that support with their current classroom teacher. If you have a kindergarten through 6th grade student whom you believe could use a little extra support, please contact me! I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been teaching with a prek-6 grade Elementary Education Professional Licensure in Virginia for the past 3 years at an elementary school. I taught 2nd grade for 2 years and 1st grade for 1 year.
