About Daniel

I'm a recent Northeastern grad with a B.S. in Physics. I've always loved to learn math and physics, and I've found that sharing my understanding with others is an even more rewarding experience. I first began tutoring in high school, then in college I worked in Northeastern's Math Tutoring Center for four semesters. I also play several musical instruments and love to work on DIY electronics projects.

I see math in everything around me, but calculus in particular. From a car's acceleration to the shape of a statue, it's everywhere. It still blows my mind the way calculus unites so many seemingly unrelated concepts. I love to teach calculus because I find that it usually begins as a terrifying topic, filled with scary terminology, and ends with a newfound appreciation for an underlying mathematical beauty.

I was always fascinated by Classical Mechanics (courses like Physics 1 or Classical Dynamics) because it mathematically describes the principles that most of us are already familiar with, at least subconsciously. Examples of almost every major concept in Newtonian Mechanics are literally everywhere, and you'd be surprised to find out how much you already know.

Electromagnetism, on the other hand, fascinates me for precisely the opposite reason: the laws of electricity and magnetism rarely show themselves in everyday life. I love to teach E&M because I've found that the main obstacle to learning it is how scary it sounds. I can remember what it was like to have no clue what 'electric field' means, and I've found a few good ways to explain these totally alien concepts to others in that same situation. When teaching someone who's encountering E&M for the first time, I've often seen anxiety turn into relief and even excitement about the topic.

If you need any help with math or physics at the college or high school levels, I'd love to meet with you. As I said, calculus is my specialty, but I'm happy to give you a hand with almost any other math or physics class. I look forward to meeting with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

As a physics major, calculus was the primary "language" of math that was used in most of my courses. As such I have studied many of its facets, from the introductory level to more advanced topics. Over time I've discovered many different ways to think about calculus concepts, so I can make them clear to diverse styles of learning.

Differential Equations

I have a B.S. in Physics from Northeastern University, where I also worked as a peer math tutor. One of my required courses that I took as a freshman was "ordinary differential equations." This course proved invaluable because the methods I learned were used repeatedly in my upper level physics courses, and because it was one of the more common classes being taken by students who came to the math tutoring center for help. Additionally, I took "Fourier series and partial differential equations" as an upper level math elective junior year, which was one of my favorite classes in college.

Physics

Physics was my major in college because I've always been fascinated by the laws of nature. I have enough experience both learning and teaching physics to be able to communicate these concepts (which are often truly bizarre to students of introductory physics) to a variety of learning styles with clarity, patience, and enthusiasm. Whether it's Newton's Laws, Maxwell's Equations, or Quantum Mechanics, I promise that I can help you understand these unusual ways of thinking.
