About Tom

I am a university professor of philosophy and experienced SAT, ACT, and LSAT tutor. I have more than 17 years of experience teaching students the critical, analytical, and expressive skills that are tested on the LSAT and the SAT and ACT reading and writing sections. I taught my first class at Cambridge University, then taught for 7 years as a PhD student at the University of Texas at Austin, and have taught as a professor for the last 10 years at Boston College.

I am a passionate teacher with the skills to teach any student how to improve their writing, reading and critical thinking. My student evaluations have consistently established me as the highest-rated professor in my department, with 75% rating me "excellent" and another 20% rating me "very good." I offer tutoring in person for a base rate of $80/hr, or online for $50/hr. I also offer lesson packages at a discount - contact me for more details!

I work carefully with students to improve their ability to comprehend complex readings and arguments, to recognize a thesis and the textual passages that support it, and understand the best grammatical choices to express ideas clearly.

The nation's top colleges recently pledged to revise their application requirements to emphasize the "daily ethical engagement" and "genuine character" of the applicant. I can help you navigate these new requirements. I am an expert in college admissions with years of experience teaching students how to comprehend the college admissions process and how to get the most out of college. I am a published author with a book on college admissions, currently under review by Macmillan Press.

Make the college of your choice compete for you! If you are looking for expert advice on how to make your college application as strong as it can be, or you simply want to improve your standardized test scores, I can help. I am available on a flexible schedule and at flexible rates. Contact me today!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

I am a college professor with 17 years of experience teaching higher education, including many years of teaching a class for first-year students on the college admissions process they have just gone through and rethink what college can offer them in the years to come. I have written a book on college admissions currently under review by Macmillan Press. I have experience working with parents and students to help them understand the admissions process from the college's point of view, to make their own best choices for how to position themselves as an applicant, to choose colleges to apply to that are a good fit, and to write essays that best express their individual passions and strengths.

SAT Reading

I have extensive experience teaching the verbal and analytical skills tested on the SAT and proven results improving student scores. I also have experience with other areas of the college admissions process, including thinking about what schools to visit and apply to, what activities and accomplishments to highlight for each school, and how to craft successful essays.
