About Andrew

I graduated with Honors in May 2015 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) from Cornell University. Apart from a reading- and writing-heavy ILR curriculum, I minored in Music (I play various percussion instruments and drum set) and Global Health, for which I have traveled to India and Zambia. While balancing numerous leadership positions, I achieved a GPA of 4.111 out of 4.3.

Whether welcoming new students as a Big Brother at Corning West High School or as an Orientation Supervisor at Cornell University, I have always found mentoring and helping students to be enjoyable and rewarding.

This passion translated well to my roles as a Teaching Assistant for Introduction to Global Health and for a Global Service Learning Program in India at Cornell University. Apart from reading and critiquing assignments, I often met with students not only to discuss class content, but also to act as a mentor. Through it all, I have maintained an emphasis on helping students meet their own goals, rather than imposing my own.

In my free time that isn't filled with music or traveling, you might find me exploring unseen corners of Boston, watching sports, or teaching myself Hindi for if and when the opportunity arises to return to India.

I recently scored a perfect 170/170 on the GRE's Quantitative Reasoning section. SAT, ACT, and GRE math are notably similar in structure, meaning effective studying strategies for one translate well to the other.

I also scored 167/170 on the GRE's Verbal Reasoning section, placing me in the 97th percentile, and 5.0/6.0 on the GRE's Analytical Writing section, placing me in the 93rd percentile. As with math, the structures of the SAT, ACT, and GRE reading and writing sections are similar.

Moreover, apart from a GPA above 4.0 in a very reading- and writing-heavy curriculum, I wrote a Senior Honors Thesis of over 50 pages and had a co-authored article accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed academic journal. I have always enjoyed and been good at editing essays and offering constructive feedback, which has often resulted in marked improvements.

I have experience tutoring multiple standardized tests, and my students have seen marked improvement in both math- and English-related sections. My methodology revolves around finding tips and tricks that crack through the test's scary-seeming questions and fit your learning and studying style.

In addition to helping develop strategies to meet your standardized testing goals, I have helped guide numerous students through the college search and application process, both informally through friends and formally through Cornell University's Red Carpet prospective student hosting program. Together, we can map out a plan for success tailored to your goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I most recently took the GRE, which is very similar in structure to the SAT and ACT. My scores were 170/170 for Quantitative Reasoning (98th percentile or higher), 167/170 for Verbal Reasoning (97th percentile), and 5.0/6.0 for Analytic Writing (93rd percentile). I am happy to work with you to develop strategies tailored to your goals and abilities. My scores were 170/170 for Quantitative Reasoning (98th percentile or higher), 167/170 for Verbal Reasoning (97th percentile), and 5.0/6.0 for Analytic Writing (93rd percentile). Throughout college, people would often turn to me for help in the most math-intensive courses I took. I am happy to work with you to develop strategies tailored to your goals and abilities.

College Counseling

I have helped guide numerous students through the college search and application process. This was done both informally through friends and formally through Cornell University's Red Carpet prospective student hosting program. Together, students and I can map out a plan for success focused on the student's goals.

Drums

As a musician, I have played percussion and drum set in groups ranging from symphony orchestras to recorded rock bands to a Javanese gamelan ensemble, with many groups in between. I have taught private drum set lessons to friends, and am happy to help provide a foundation for expression on drums and/or percussion tailored to a student's musical goals.

My main hobby is playing drums and listening to music, with emphases on rock, funk, fusion, and jazz. I have played and sat in as a guest with various rock bands since high school. Apart from that, I have played marching percussion (and was a drumline section leader), classical and wind ensemble percussion with an emphasis on tympani, Javanese gamelan, hand percussion with a group that paired Sanskrit chanting with modern grooves, and drum set/percussion with many musicals' orchestra pits, a steel drum group, and more.
