About Sue

I have a great deal of experience tutoring students. For over 3 years, I have provided one-on-one tutoring for international undergraduate and graduate students at a tutoring center at Northeastern University in Boston, including writing and reading proficiency, TOEFL preparation, conversation, and career preparation. I have also been an instructor for Year One Freshman Seminar at a design college in Boston, introducing students to a variety of topics addressing college life, both specifically and with a broader perspective.

In addition, I was an Adjunct Creative Writing instructor, including course building, teaching, and working with students on problem areas and was a Teaching Assistant for a Social Psychology course, including leading discussion sections and grading papers.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored ESL students for over four years. I have prepared students for both the TOEFL and IELTS, by concentrating on oral and written skills. I have suggested that students break down a verbal response into distinct ideas and then have each idea relate to the next as much as possible. In reading, it is important to look for key words and phrases and focus on them, as it is impossible to concentrate on each word but rather to understand key concepts. It is critical that students understand the material by increasing vocabulary and practicing both written and spoken English.

TOEFL

I have been an ESL tutor for over four years. I work at the international tutoring center at Northeastern University, I concentrate primarily on the grammar, reading, writing, and speaking sections of the TOEFL exams. The majority of students I tutor are able to pass the exam after our sessions.

Vocabulary

I have tutored both domestic and international students for four years. For vocabulary issues, I suggest that students read the passage or the sentence several times so they have an idea of the meaning. Then we look at what the particular word is that is unknown and how it relates to the rest of the passage or sentence. In some cases, the word or words are part of a phrase, therefore idiomatic. In other cases, the word may be used in an in unusual way and we can use a thesaurus to look for synonyms.
