About Ben

I am an alumnus of The Episcopal Academy class of 2006. While I was in high school, I realized that math and science were my favorite subjects, so I devoted my academic efforts to those topics while also earning varsity letters in three sports. After high school, I attended Johns Hopkins University where I received my BS in Mechanical Engineering.

During my time at JHU, I learned how to actually *think*. The concept of approaching problems from different points of view was the most important lesson that I learned. I specifically applied my knowledge of physics when I was a TA for a newly introduced Mechanical Engineering course that was equivalent to the first semester of Physics (mechanics).

After JHU, I attended Penn State University with the intent to earn a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, but had to withdraw after my project was defunded.

Drawing from my experience as a TA and a tutor, I am able to pass on my knowledge to the next generation of students.

Please feel free to contact me at any time with whatever questions you may have. Good luck with your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is one of the most fundamental concepts in math. I use examples that are relevant to the individual student, which allows them to think about the problem from their own perspective. I focus on the "how" and "why" aspects of Algebra. This ideology provides the student with the tools to solve any problem with their own skills, rather than relying on the memorization of rules.

Calculus

I earned a 5 on both AB and BC calculus and have used the skills from these tests throughout my college and post graduate careers. Calculus is confusing to many students, but one-on-one tutoring is a great option to explain the concepts in further detail. While tutoring students in calculus, I try to relate the problems to the real world with the hope that the student retains the idea of the problem, rather than memorizing the solution.

Physics

I have been tutoring physics professionally for over two years. Combined with my experience as a TA and my mechanical engineering degree, I have learned a broad range of methods to effectively teach physics. I like to tutor the topic as it relates to the individual student, e.g. if they run track and field, I can tailor my examples towards their personal experiences. Physics is a class filled with the classic "Aha!" moments and I would be honored to help you find as many of those moments as possible.

Precalculus

Precalculus is one of the most important subjects to fully understand before approaching many higher level math and science subjects. While earning my degree as a mechanical engineer, I used these fundamental skills daily and have learned various approaches to solving math problems, which I am able to pass along to any potential students. In tutoring math, my method is to try to understand what the student sees and steer them towards the solution by asking questions of them, rather than telling the student directly how the problem is solved. This allows the student to learn how to solve problems on their own terms, giving them confidence in their own abilities.

SAT Math

SAT math is essentially reading comprehension with numbers. I teach this topic from the ground up. I always ask: What do you *know* about the problem? What do you *want* to find? How can you find it? This method allows the student to figure out the answer with their own solutions, rather than mindlessly applying the various formulae.

Great tutor! — We used Ben for my son's Algebra 2 struggles. Previously, he had been going in for help almost every day at school, with only moderate success. I noticed the change in my son's confidence almost immediately. I'm not sure exactly what it was, but I think Ben must have a way of explaining concepts that my son understands. So thankful that someone directed me to WyzAnt and we found Ben. ...
