About Matthew

A friend of mine describes me as an avid learner, questioner and listener. I am a Licensed Massachusetts educator of students with Moderate Disabilities Pre-K to 8th grade. I have two years of experience as a co-teacher in the Boston Public Schools working with students with social, emotional, learning and behavioral disabilities.

I love to create things, models, bridges, sketches. I love to craft stories of poems out of words and sentences. I think learning is a process of questioning, attempting, revising and more questioning.

I have two years of experience co-teaching science to middle schoolers. Subjects taught include: earth science, chemistry, the human body and ecosystems.

I love writing, wrote many research papers in college as well as an honors thesis. I like to write creatively, and journal.

I have two school years and two summers worth of experience working with students with disabilities that included Autism and ADHD, learning disabilities, oppositional defiant disorder, depression and anxiety.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I taught chess for 3 summers at a summer enrichment program. I led lessons for students who were beginners and also for more advanced students. Also I play chess for fun when I get the chance.

Elementary (K-6th)

I worked as an assistant teacher in the Boston Public Schools with 5th and 6th graders for 2 years. While there I worked with students who were significantly behind in all academic subjects. I am currently in graduate school seeking a Masters in Elementary Education.

Fitness

I was a Varsity Athlete for four years in both High School and College. I ran track and field in which I participated in daily training runs, workouts and races on the weekends. I learned the importance of discipline, hard work and setting achievable goals. Fitness is a priority in my life and would be happy to help children and adults work towards their own personal fitness goals.

Soccer

I have been playing soccer since the age of 5 years old. I played competitively in high school and was captain of the varsity team in both my junior and senior years. I have experience leading my teammates through conditioning, passing, shooting and team tactic drills. Additionally, for 2 summers I taught physical education classes at a summer camp for children aged 5-9.

Special Needs

I am a licensed educator of students with moderate disabilities Pre-K to 8th grade in the state of Massachusetts. I have worked for two full school years at a school which serves students with emotional, behavioral and learning disabilities. I worked one-on-one with these students as well in groups.

Track & Field

I competed in Track and Field for 8 years in High School and College. I competed in events including the high jump, long jump, shot put, 800m, one Mile, 4 x 400m relay. I trained for these events 5 days a week for 5-6 months a year for 8 years.

Matt has had to start with the basics with Nick since Nick had never played soccer before. Nick is enjoying getting together with Matt.
