My name is Tamar L. I am interested in working with young adults who want to improve their writin have a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in humanities from the Harvard University Extension School and a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing from Hollins University. I have taught literature and writing to undergraduates at Hollins University and taught high school English and composition in rural Georgia.
My philosophy of teaching has been informed by my varied academic background. As educators, we want our students to actively engage with the texts they read, but we also want to encourage them to take intellectual risks in their writing. We want to introduce them to new ideas, but we don't want them to parrot our ideas back to us. We need to familiarize them the conventions and rigors of academic writing without dampening their intellectual fervor. In other words, teaching them to use the rules and restrictions of academic writing as a tool. This tool will allow them more freedom to express themselves and more effective means to communicate their ideas.
I find teaching teenagers particularly rewarding. Teens seem to be brimming with a desire to express themselves. They have strong opinions about almost everything and aren’t shy about sharing them, which makes them enthusiastic writers. Their enthusiasm doesn’t close them off to new ideas, which makes them curious listeners. To me, that means teenagers are ideal students.
Besides teaching my interests include bicycles, street art, poetry by living poets, poetry by dead poets, funny animal videos, little free libraries, vintage romance comics, weird vegetables, making lists, and cake, in no particular order. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
