About Jacquelyn

Hello! I am a graduate student at Boston College looking to tutor students in English, Math, and other subjects. I graduated summa cum laude from Saint Mary's College with a BA in Integral Liberal Arts - a rigorous program based in the Great Books that delves into important ideas in philosophy, literature, history, religion, mathematics, the sciences, and music. I have two years of experience working as the Academic Support Center coordinator at a high school - a job which required me to tutor multiple subjects to high school students. I also taught a Language Arts class to freshmen during my time at that high school.

I specialize in high school math and essay writing (I particularly enjoy helping students to craft their college application essays), although I enjoy other subjects as well and am proficient in them. I am also willing to tutor well-behaved younger students. My tutoring style is to focus on efficiency and independence so that my students develop the confidence to work on their own. I take the time to make sure each student both understands what the method is and why the method is what it is for any given problem - be it a geometrical proof or a literary response essay.

I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

As a tutor in the Academic Support Center of a high school, I helped students to understand the material, complete their homework, and prepare for tests.

Algebra 2

As the coordinator of the Academic Support Center at a high school, my responsibilities included tutoring students in algebra 2. I helped my students to understand the material, complete homework, and prepare for tests.

Bible Studies

I am enrolled in Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, and will be taking graduate level Old and New Testament courses. I have some knowledge of Biblical Greek. My undergraduate coursework included reading, discussing, and writing about the Bible. I got an A in that class.

College Counseling

Some of my duties as the coordinator of the Academic Support Center at a high school included mentoring students as they applied to colleges and decided which college to attend. I helped them to navigate their applications, to plan and polish essays, and to ask the right questions when deciding which colleges to attend.

English

The Language Arts class I taught focused on reviewing English grammar as well as reading comprehension and composition skills. As a tutor in the Academic Support Center of a high school, my duties included helping students to write, proofread, and revise essays for their English, history, and religion classes, as well as their college essays.

GED

I have two years experience tutoring all subjects full time. I taught a high school language arts class that focuses on reviewing grammar, writing conventions, composition, and reading comprehension.

GRE

I have excellent test taking skills. I scored 170 on the verbal reasoning section and 159 on the quantitative reasoning section.

Phonics

I volunteered in a program called Community of Readers, in which I helped elementary school students to improve their reading skills. Many of their problems were caused by a lack of understanding of phonics, and I helped them to improve.

Reading

One of the main components of the language arts class I taught was improving students' reading comprehension. I volunteered with Community of Readers, a program whose purpose was to improve elementary school students' reading skills. I also helped my brother learn how to read.

SAT Reading

Part of my job at the Academic Support Center of a high school was to help students prepare for the SAT. I also have lots of personal experience taking standardized tests.

Study Skills

I have two years experience coordinating the Academic Support Center at a high school. My responsibilities include tutoring all subjects and helping students on academic probation to raise their grades. The majority of the students I work with have more trouble getting their work done than they do understanding the material. I teach them how to use an index and glossary, how to manage their time, and how to prioritize.

Writing

I have extensive experience helping students to write and edit essays. I also taught a language arts class that covers parts of speech, writing conventions, composition, and reading comprehension. I helped my brother learn how to read, and I volunteered with community of readers, a program dedicated to helping elementary school students improve their reading skills.
