Ithaca College (Jazz Studies)
Hello! I am a musician - which means I have done a LOT of learning on my own. I have had experience in nearly every field of music, from performing almost any style you can think of, to learning the complexities of music theory and analyzing music from the early Renaissance to "modern" atonal music. I have composed songs for TV and and entire film scores, as well as instrumental music for live performance (including small ensemble jazz and big band jazz, folk, funk, Brazilian, etc). I really, really enjoy music - and I want you to enjoy it in whatever capacity you are studying it. I am extremely patient and I will always do my best to instill my love for music and learning into you. Hello! I am a musician - which means I have done a LOT of learning on my own. Scott is teaching my pre-college son ear training and composing. He is very patient and they are making great progress.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have completed the prescribed courses in Music Theory at Ithaca College with a cumulative GPA of 3.9 in the 5 levels of the courses. I have studied compositional techniques of western classical music from the Renaissance up to the 20th century, including 12-tone music, and have written several thesis papers on the works of composers such as Beethoven and Schoenberg. I have also thoroughly studied jazz composition and completed the prescribed courses in Jazz Arranging, Jazz Theory and Jazz Standards & Literature with a cumulative GPA of 4.0 in all courses. I have studied the works of composers such as Cole Porter, Hoagy Carmichael, and George Gershwin, as well as arrangers such as Sammy Nestico and Thad Jones, and have written compositions for small and large jazz ensembles.
I completed the prescribed Ear Training curriculum at Ithaca College with a 4.0 average in the 4 levels of the course, which covers tonal ear training (major + minor, going through logical harmonic sequences) as well as atonal ear training (all major and minor modes, trichordal and tetrachordal cells, rapidly modulating passages). My Ear Training tutoring focuses around using solfege to recognize and vocalize interval patterns and involves heavy usage of movable "do", allowing the student sharpen their inner ear to quickly accommodate a new tonal center.
I completed the prescribed Sight Singing curriculum at Ithaca College with a 4.0 average in the 4 levels of the course, which covers tonal sight singing (major + minor, going through logical tonal harmonic sequences) as well as atonal sight singing (all major and minor modes, trichordal and tetrachordal cells, rapidly modulating passages). My sight singing tutoring is based on the solfege system, where the student internalizes intervalic patterns and develops a strong sense of tonal center. Movable "do" is a central teaching tool to facilitate modulation to a new tonal center. The "Takadimi" Indian rhythmic solfege system is used to internalize rhythms in simple and compound meters, as well as symmetric and asymmetric meters.
