About Jody

I am a caring and devoted educator who believes that every person has the ability to reach their potential in order to live their dreams. As a certified elementary school teacher with my Masters Degree in education, I have been working for several years in the Brighton, MA area. Presently, I am pursuing an additional license as a Teacher of Students with Mild/Moderate Disabilities. I am both respectful and encouraging to my students, whether school-age or older. If a child needs extra help in academics, or an adult needs help getting ahead, it is my pleasure to help them. Due to logistics, I will tutor students who live in my general vicinity or who are willing to agree to a meeting place. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I am presently teaching students who need differentiated instruction because they have ADD/ADHD. I took an intensive course on developing IEP's as well as differentiating instruction for those who need accommodations. I hold certification in SPed for those with Mild-Moderate Disabilities. I am very patient and creative.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have received certification and re-certification in Grades 1-6 from the MA DESE. In addition, I have attained my M.Ed., I've taught as a BPS educator for more than 15 years. I also have extensive professional development courses.

Elementary Math

I have been teaching in the BPS for over 10 years. I have taught math to all grades from K-8. I am certified to teach elementary math and have passed my elementary MTEL.

ESL/ESOL

I have taken several BPS courses in ESL and SEI. I have also passed the ESL MTEL and am certified in ESL PK-6. I've also taken two versions of the MELA O beyond 2010. I hope to be trained to give the new test this summer. I've been an ESL instructor for grades K-5 as well.

Phonics

I am certified in elementary education and have taught 1st grade phonics. I also have worked on phonics as a resource room teacher and have taken online and PD courses to keep up with the field.

Special Needs

I have worked with students who have learning disabilities for several years. I am very patient and accentuate their abilities rather than their disabilities. I have also completed a 150 hour internship and am certified to teach students with learning disabilities from PK-8 through the DESE.

Writing

Prior to attaining my certifications in teaching, I attained my B.A. in Journalism. In doing so, I've learned techniques to improve my everyday writing. I am able to utilize content-related vocabulary in a concise manner and teach students to do the same. In addition, I continuously use my skills in a side business.
