About Thomas

I have taught at large universities in the US and Europe, lived in Denmark for 19 years, France for one year and have toured in Brazil playing percussion with a band on four occasions, and have written a book of literary history/criticism as well as a college-level writing manual that was a required text at a major university. I teach in all phases of language arts - reading, writing, comprehension, ESL, essay writing, creative writing, and literature. I have taught English composition, World Literature, Comparative Literature, Literary Theory, French Language and Literature, as well as philosophy and percussion.

I have worked as a writer and editor of English and a translator of French, Italian, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and Portuguese into English. My academic credentials include a BA (summa cum laude, departmental prize), MA and PhD (with distinction). Aside from these professional pursuits, I have played drums and percussion in various groups for many years and have given workshops in Brazilian and world percussion. For leisure, I enjoy wildlife observation, hiking, long-distance biking and following pro sports!

I can offer a flexible yet rigorous approach tailored to the student's level and needs, and always with a sane sense of perspective, based on many years' experience in universities, working with students from around the world (and correcting thousands of student papers). Not least, I have a good appreciation for the role of humor in facilitating a positive learning experience. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drums

I have played drum set since I was a boy (more than 50 years), and have concentrated on Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian and West African instruments and music for more than 15 years now. In the 1970s, I studied in a summer program at the Berklee College and had private lessons at the Boston Conservatory. I studied percussion with Birger Sulsbruck, Ramiro Musotto, Scott Feiner, Fabiano Selek and Joao Hermeto in Denmark and Brazil. I have played all styles of music in small groups, big bands, street bands, etc. I currently play freelance with various groups around Cape Cod, including the Cape Cod African Dance and Drum ensemble, another percussion ensemble and the group Flip Side.
