Boston University (History)
University of Massachusetts at Amherst (Master's)
I am currently an assistant history professor at Bunker Hill Community College. My college background is in history/government/politics. I received my Bachelor's Degree in History from Boston University and my Master's Degree in History from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
My background in education came from working at an after school program as a tutor, enrichment teacher, and program manager. As a program manager I made sure that students from K-5 received a strong foundation of learning through our literacy and math curricula. Both curricula incorporated the use of differentiation strategies to account for the different learning mechanisms that people demonstrate. Also, because I teach at a community college, I have experience in teaching diverse age groups. I treat each student as his/her own individual. I do not believe in a one-size fits all proposition. My profession as a history professor allows me to incorporate strategies that work. I believe in creating a rigorous, yet student specific program for each and every student.Because of my background, I can tutor K-5 students in grammar, reading, vocabulary, and spelling. My college graduate background allows me to tutor older students in Algebra, History, Government/politics, and in the GRE, SAT, GED and TOEFL standardized tests.
If you choose to meet with me, I do not charge for consultations. Its very important that a student/parent are comfortable with me before designing a program for that student. Once a student accepts me as a tutor, I will design a program for that student that fits their needs. I am willing to make the first lesson free just to ensure student comfort with my style. Its all about my students. I can tutor at libraries, Bunker Hill Community College or anyplace that allows for an atmosphere of student comfort.
I look forward to embarking on this educational journey with you and hope that we can be successful together.

For those who want to do group rates, I can do group rates for $30 per person per hour in groups of at least three to five. For more than five the rate drops to $30 per person per hour.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I can help in quadratic equations, graphing lines, angle work, areas of two dimensional objects, functions, inequalities, polynomials, variables, and other areas of algebra. I will fashion a program around your learning.
American History is not a very well-loved subject in high school or college. I would tutor in ways to make the history relevant to the students. My approach would be to demonstrate "why does history matter"? That approach would help students to understand and look at history differently. Also, I would help students in their writing and critical thinking of history to make them think about it. The process of thought makes it more interesting.
You child needs help with their phonics, spelling skills, vocabulary, or grammar? I can help with the use of a particular curriculum similar to the one I use in my after school programs. It is guaranteed to increase your child's literacy skills. They can learn to read better, write better, and spell better. I will increase their vocabulary by 5 words a week.
I have successfully taken the GRE twice, and I have an MA in history. I presently teach at a community college so I am quite versed in the rigorous work needed for students to succeed.
I would give a comprehensive test in the GRE to see where your strengths and weaknesses are and then create a program specifically for the student.
It must have regular scheduled meetings to ensure the student's higher likelihood for success.
I help in every area of math on the SAT. Geometry, algebra, and basic math concepts are features on the SAT. I will explain the area formulas and perimeter formulas of geometric shapes. I will explain the various strategies needed to successfully conquer this test. I will cover triangles, angles, circles, functions, ratios, data analysis, sequences, exponents, quadrilaterals, quadratic equations, etc. Every kind of problem on the SAT, I will cover.
I will give either a math or reading or entire practice test to the pupil depending on his or her needs. Then I will analyze the data and determine his/her weaknesses and begin with them. I will create a comprehensive plan geared to show strategies and ways to conquer the particular aspects of the SAT that we are going to look at.
The schedule will be created to best maximize the pupil's time and comfort level.
