About Tobi

As a member of faculty in the Computer Media Technology department at Bunker Hill Community College, Charlestown, MA since 2009, I believe in student-centered learning that draws upon students' life experiences and in using strategies and technologies to maximize opportunities where students can reach their educational goals. One of those strategies is ensuring that students engage with technological tools to solve class problems that prepare them for the workforce.

Helping students develop technology skills both in a classroom setting and online is a big part of what I do in various courses including PHP, MySQL, ASP, JavaScript, XHTML and Adobe Photoshop. Through my experience, I believe in teaching with concepts and tasks that expose students to real-world problems so what they learn can be applied in the job market. I have seen that this approach helps students get personally involved and interested in learning.

In my online classes, students appreciate the classes because they say they have the flexibility to work from home or anywhere else. They also like the idea of not having to make the trip to the campus which saves time and money. In terms of understanding and excelling in the courses, I find that some students do as well or better than their counterparts in my face-to-face classes. It is my conclusion that such online students have a lot of focus and discipline, are self-motivated and have quite busy lifestyles. Being able to continue their education in a convenient way, helps them achieve their personal goals.

An idea that my students find quite helpful is in seeing the completed works of other classmates posted after submission deadlines. This is a form of reflective sharing. Students regularly say that they benefit from classmates’ feedback and get positively challenged when they see others making progress in certain challenging areas. They exchange ideas on problems and fixes and can apply the knowledge gained to future tasks or assignments.

Before completing my M.Ed. in Educational Technology, I attended and completed my Associate in Science degree with Highest Honors at Bunker Hill Community College. I was the only student in May 2009 graduating class to receive that distinction after being on numerous Dean’s lists. In addition to teaching, I was the IT Analyst/Web designer before becoming the Director of Information Technology at a Health Center in Dorchester, MA in 2013. My work here involves design and creation of electronic/computer based programs which eliminate the use of paper files and documents and development and maintenance of the employee portal. Some of these programs I have built run on PHP/MySQL, MS Access and JavaScript. One such web-based program is used to document patient registration in the Massachusetts MEDICAID program. The program is able to perform search queries and run reports needed by the state agency. To further my education and help with the knowledge and skills needed in my IT work, I completed a B.Sc in Computer Information Systems at the University of Maine at Augusta in May 2016.

Another current project I’m developing is a website. The site aims to help users organize their personal or business digital life, securely save and share important notes, schedules, documents, pictures and access them anywhere 24/7. There’s also a smart search that makes it easy to find anything create and saved when you need it.

I know technology is dynamic changes are frequent and often it's hard to keep up. This is why I enjoy learning about and teaching computer-related technologies and ensure that I maintain a lifestyle of life-long learning so I can share the knowledge I gain on the job - both in academics and business - everyday to help my students. Every student I work with can be assured that they will get the same high-level commitment and individual attention I provide to over 100 students yearly during Spring, Summer or Fall semester. My experience and work in the IT field also means I have a very broad range of technology know-how that will benefit anyone I work with.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

CSS

I have been involved in the following for the past 7 years:

Ensure HTML and new XHTML/CSS Style Sheet code conformity with industry standards and continuous validation of pages to comply with ADA (American Disabilities Act) standards. Edit layout, positioning, navigation, look and feel of Web content to maintain consistency and compliancy of updated material to departmental and institutional standards. Train the web design team and support staff in web page updates, proofreading, HTML coding, link evaluation and validation, web page upload and CSS Style sheets.

PHP

I teach PHP as a faculty member in the Computer Media Technology department at Bunker Hill Community College following a step-by-step introduction to the topics which include introduction to Web development and PHP, working with data types and operators.

Also, students are introduced to concepts including building functions and control structures, manipulating strings, accessing files and directories, manipulating data in arrays and strings, working with databases and MySQL, manipulating MySQL databases with PHP, managing state information, developing object-oriented PHP, and debugging and
error handling.

It is my practice to teach by demonstrating and using many real-world examples to give students a very clear and practical understanding of the concepts and lessons in the course. Students who complete the course have the added advantage in the work place that comes from exposure to web development and computer skills.

Ultimately, in-depth learning enables any student to manipulate MySQL Databases with PHP, connect to MySQL from PHP, learn how to handle MySQL errors, execute SQL statements with PHP and use PHP to work with MySQL databases.

Web Design

I teach a range of Web design courses at Bunker Hill Community College including PHP, HTML/HTML5, CSS and Adobe Photoshop. Students are taught the principles and concepts of designing and creating WEB pages in a HTML format. The course is also designed to expose students to the construct of HTML tags, the attribute modification of HTML tags, the incorporation of CSS tags, CSS pseudo tags, dynamic effects using styles
through classroom projects and group tasks.

Additionally, the courses teach utilization of graphics and dynamic graphics used in Web design as well as content presentation control via HTML tables and HTML frames. Advance learners get exposure to the new features of HTML5, jQuery and the incorporation of basic JavaScript into HTMl pages.
