About Ian

Learning and teaching is never a process which can be properly dictated and planned for, it must evolve based on regular and meaningful interaction between a student and teacher. It is with this mindset that I approach every student I work with, always being cognizant of a specific student’s strengths and weaknesses and working to improve every aspect of their academic journey.

Moreover, I currently hold my Masters degree in Political Science and International Relations from Boston College where I wrote my thesis on the Middle East entitled, “Economic Opportunity and Inequality as Contributing Factors to the Arab Spring: The Cases of Tunisia and Egypt”. Prior to this I earned my Bachelors Degree in Communication and History with Magna Cum Laude and Dean's List First honors, also from Boston College. Beyond this I have done certificate coursework at the National University of Singapore in Game Theory, Cambridge University (UK) in ancient empires and politics, Venice International University in globalization and its effects on the modern world, international business, social sustainability, & modern US, EU, and NATO relations, and Boston University in wine studies.

I specialize in a wide variety of subjects including: ACT, SAT, English, Reading, History, Politics, Government, Study Skills, Writing, and a host of others. I truly look forward to helping with your academic pursuits and making the learning process a fruitful one.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your academic goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Political Science

I have my Master's Degree in Political Science and International Relations from Boston College, where I wrote a detailed thesis on the Middle East and political revolution. I also was a Graduate Assistant in Political Science department and taught a weekly class to undergraduates on International Politics.

Public Speaking

I not only took public speaking in college, at Boston College, but also have extensive personal experience with public speaking. I taught a weekly class in graduate school to 15 students on international politics, where I had to prepare lectures, and was a part of numerous detailed presentations in graduate school which involved speaking to my peers and professors in various settings (classroom and formal panel style).

Religion

While at Boston College, a Jesuit School, I took numerous classes on theology, Christian Theology, Modern Religions, and political theology. I additionally took an intense graduate seminar on the implications of religion in society and the historical origins of religious movements with Boston College's most revered Professor: Father Michael Himes.

Study Skills

I have extensive experience in structuring study plans and overall study skills. As a graduate assistant at Boston College I aided undergrads in structuring their time and focus in complex classes to help ensure their success. Additionally, I have worked with many students with how to achieve successful time management, subject focus, and organization to help manage what can seem like a daunting amount of work. Finally, I always work directly, proactively, and reactively with students to ensure that their study process is fully tailored to their specific strengths and weaknesses.

Swimming

I was a competitive swimmer for most of life and continue to swim to this very day. I specialized in distance events (the 500 and 1650) as well as shorter events (the 100 Backstroke). I taught swim lessons back when I lived in MI and was a lifeguard prior to that.

Very flexible and knowledgeable

Being a senior in college, and having horrible unorganized classes and professors, he helps me understand and helps break things down for me. He also is flexible when it comes to hours, if the weather is bad, we do tutoring online. Also, we send each other assignments and we correct it on googledocs.
