About Luiz

Originally from Brazil, I came to the USA to work as a scientist in 2005, and Boston has been my home since then. Here, I have had the amazing experience of working at renowned institutions such as MIT and UMass. Since my PhD program, I have routinely trained students–from high school summer programs to full-time undergraduate and graduate courses.

My two decades working as a scientist include mentoring young students in basic-to-applied biology, chemistry, biophysics and much more. Helping them to learn, to grow, to become independent and confident, and to succeed in their endeavors, has become the most personally gratifying aspect of my career.

I believe that attentive listening and respect for individuality is crucial for achieving a successful mentor/student relationship. Therefore, my mentoring/teaching philosophy involves a friendly, compassionate approach to better understand the student's reality, identify his or her struggles and goals, establish a personal connection–a “language” we both will understand–and ultimately work together to tackle specific issues and topics. Mentoring students has been one of my most rewarding experiences to date. It is with pride that I speak of my contribution to their academic and personal growth. For me, it is extremely rewarding to watch their successful journeys, as some of them, for example, are now confident, young adults thriving in top-rated medical schools.

Please contact me to discuss how we can work together to improve your success!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biochemistry

I have a BS in Biology, and a PhD in Immunology and Microbiology, which includes Biochemistry.
