About Bernard

I have both a master's (Harvard) and a PhD (Univ. of Chicago) and have taught at the college and graduate levels. I have also worked with students from k-12, and tutored as well. I currently focus especially on adult education.

I've been tutoring since I was a college freshman. I've tutored Latin, English, reading, writing skills, history, religion, French, etc.. My students (for both tutoring and classroom teaching) have ranged from 2nd graders to college, graduate students, and adults.

What makes me effective? I have the knack of figuring out each student's personal style of learning, and I adapt my approach to make it easier for them to learn. It also helps that I can communicate on many levels--from elementary English to academic style. But I always prefer plain talk and concrete examples and visuals to get my message across. For students with study skills problems, i offer a structured approach to breaking down lengthy or complex material into digestible form. For progress in writing, as a former newspaper editor I bring a sharp eye for clear concise expression. I think ideas are fun !--and since I like both people and teaching, students enjoy working with me.

I studied in Paris (two degrees from the University of Paris), still have friends there, and speak fluently. I have taught and tutored adults, college students, and junior high/high school level.

In addition to my lengthy classwork in English, I spent 6 years in competitive debating to hone my language skills. I have written a 400-page thesis, published a book, published more than 200 articles, currently maintain a blog, and worked as a newspaper editor.

I am flexible about schedule and will recommend possible adjustments as I assess the student's needs. My style is affable, gentle, firm, and geared to motivating learning. Let's learn together!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have both a master's (Harvard) and a PhD (Univ. of Chicago) in theology, and have taught at the college and graduate levels. I have also worked in religion classes with students from k-12, and tutored as well. I currently focus especially on adult education.

Film

I studied film in Paris as an undergrad with a close associate of Andre Bazin, worked at La Cinematheque Francaise. Later I continued my films studies under Rudolph Arnheim (at the Carpenter Center for Visual and Environmental Studies) during my master's program at Harvard. Since then I have written widely on movies and continue to see 200 films a year. I also visit Paris each year to renew my contacts there.

Proofreading

After completing my master's at Harvard and PhD at the University of Chicago, I worked as a newspaper editor. My schoolwork involved proofreading many papers as well as my 400 page thesis. My newspaper work involved proofreading hundreds of articles on a weekly basis. My professional career includes blogging, for which I must proofread weekly. I also proofread papers for international students from Northeastern University, Boston University, and Boston College.

Public Speaking

I began debating in high school, and continued in college--7 years in all. I also did public speaking at the same time, and won many awards in both. I also mentored a national champion in debate. Since then, I have been both a classroom teacher and an invited speaker for more than 40 years.
