About Maya

I absolutely love learning, and I have recently discovered the satisfaction and fulfillment that can come with passing knowledge onto others. I am currently in my second year at Northeastern University, pursuing a degree in Bioengineering with a minor in International Relations. As salutatorian of my high school graduating class, I know that hard work and dedication can greatly pay off. Throughout my life I have had the pleasure of working with children of all backgrounds in school, sports, and in many summers of nannying and, for me, there is no feeling more satisfying than helping a child succeed.

I specialize in tutoring math, Spanish, and English/writing. I find it very advantageous that I myself am a student and that, not long ago I was a grade school student with my own fair share of struggles. I understand the frustration that comes with not understanding concepts, and that is why I try to cater my tutoring completely to the student's needs. By understanding the students' learning styles and thinking processes, I can present the same material received in class, but in a way that makes sense. That said, one of my personal goals is to leave the student feeling confident and prepared for any challenges to come, so I assign a short, but challenging homework set after every lesson. I will also provide periodic assessment and progress reports.

Throughout grade school, I always had a fascination with math, and was always in the highest math courses available for my year. I took Honors Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry in sophomore year, AP Calculus in junior year, and IB Math (a calculus-based math overview class). Since then in college, I have taken Calculus 2, Calculus 3, and Linear and Differential Equations. I pride myself on being able to break down difficult and complex material into small and easy pieces, and synthesizing that information in a way that is easy to understand. In every math class I have taken, I have always been the friend that helps peers with homework and explaining concepts with patience and clarity.

I went to a Spanish Immersion Elementary School from K-6, and have continued studying not only Spanish as a language, but also the literature and culture of Spanish-speaking countries ever since. In high school, I took AP Spanish Language, AP Spanish Literature, and IB Spanish Language Literature and Culture, continuing in college with a high level conversational Spanish course. I have traveled to a plethora of Spanish-speaking countries such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina, and Spain, so I am familiar with the different accents, dialects, and slang associated with each region.

As I have always tended to favor the left side of my brain, grammar and vocabulary were always strong suits for me throughout grade school, but creative writing always came as a challenge. I always dreaded writing assignments and procrastinated them until the last second. My essays tended to be choppy and confusing, and eventually I gave up, deciding that I would probably never excel at writing and to focus my energy elsewhere. It was only in college that I found that with different techniques and with a different mindset even I could write something insightful and enjoyable to read. I now love to write, both academically and for pleasure, and have learned to maximize on both effort and time while doing so. I think this gives me a very unique advantage, as I understand firsthand many of the problems experienced by students. I am able to pass down tips and tricks I have learned along the way in order to catch students up and change the way they look at English and writing.

I want the student to enjoy learning from me and I ask for feedback from both students and parents. If requested, I would be glad to do a free consultation meeting before starting with any tutoring. I have a 6-hour cancellation policy, but offer makeup sessions.

I am happy to travel to a location within 1 mile of the Northeastern University campus, but would also be able to accommodate students in my campuses empty classrooms, which are often equipped with whiteboards, computers, and projectors.

I look forward to working with you and helping you succeed in your studies!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have a very strong familiarity with the ACT, and specifically the English section. I received a 34 when I took it and taught myself all the grammar rules that usually show up on this section of the ACT. I have tutored students for all parts of the ACT before, and am familiar with different techniques and drills that help students.
