About Carmen

I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music with a dual Bachelor of Music in Performance and Jazz Composition. Though deeply rooted in jazz, my experience performing and composing for a wide range of musical styles has informed me in ways that many musicians are not, due to their limited abilities and stylistic preferences. Thus, I am able to pass that information and experience along to my students, regardless of style or ability. I also have an extensive background in composition, harmony and songwriting and many students find that they can study multiple topics with me instead of seeking out new teachers for each additional topic they choose to study.

Music is an aural art form made to pleasure the ear, so I believe that a strong foundation in ear training is crucial no matter what style of music a student desires to study. The ear navigates the music and informs the brain and fingers, so I always place much emphasis on proper ear training. That, coupled with insight into harmony and melody, prepares students of all styles and abilities to be successful musicians, and I am glad to attest to the success of many of my students who have gone on to post-secondary music degrees, as well as become professional musicians.

I love music!!!.... and everything about music....so that makes talking and teaching about it even better! I also love seeing students reactions to materials and topics that they've never heard of, or used before. Usually, there is the "light bulb effect," when they realize that these items or tools are the exact things they need to achieve a certain sound, or that they've heard something for a long time and have never been able to identify it, etc....Once that happens, then they take that information and make it their own and return with their approach to the music. Their approach informs me in a way that I may not have thought of, and so, having students is a reciprocal learning experience.

I primarily teach online using Skype and/or Facetime, with an overhead piano cam and a face cam, and it has worked great. I also have many resources that I make available to my students online, for free. I only require a minimum 24-hour cancellation notice and I am very flexible with scheduling and payment. I look forward to helping you reach your musical potential!!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

Summa Cum Laude Graduate in Jazz Composition, Berklee College of Music. I've composed and arranged for many different sized ensembles, especially big band and jazz orchestra. I teach composition with an emphasis on analyzing structure and harmonic function, as well as arranging music for various instruments and ensembles.

Ear Training

I teach ear training with a large emphasis on singing intervals and interval recognition. The strengthening of this skill leads to harmonic dictation and finally, transcription of various exercises, solos and chords, in order to establish the ear as the primary source for information and inspiration.

Piano

Graduate, Summa Cum Laude, Piano Performance, Berklee College of Music. Grade 9 Honours, Royal Conservatory of Music, Canada. My classical training is the foundation upon which I have established my abilities in jazz music, and I have been fortunate to maintain a career where I draw on both skills. I specialize in helping students bridge the gap between both styles as well as assimilating them both into a unique musical voice. I am most fluent in bebop music and improvising over jazz standards, as well as teaching all aspects of jazz piano, namely, comping, and solo piano techniques.

Songwriting

Winner, 2010 Rose Theatre Songwriting Competition, Brampton, ON. I teach songwriting by decomposing song forms and various lyric rhymes, in order to fully grasp the elements of a great song, no matter the style or story. My deep knowledge of harmony allows me to have control over the simpler harmony used in songwriting, and then introduce more complex techniques at the availability of the student, and if the music warrants, more complexity.
