About Paul

Hello!

My name is Paul. I have been going to school in Boston for six years. I have an undergraduate degree in English and cognitive science and am currently finishing up a master's degree in literature (will graduate in December 2015). I have diverse qualifications as a writer: I worked as the news and opinions editor at my student newspaper for a year. I then took over as managing editor for a year and a half. While in graduate school I taught my own section (I was the professor of record) for an entire year and am well trained both in literature and composition. I have also been a teacher's assistant for a year. I have presented my research and writing at three conferences, one of which was a national conference (MLA) and am looking forward to another national conference (NeMLA) in March of 2016. I was licensed to teach English as a second language (ESL) in November of 2013.

Most pertinent to this site, I have been tutoring for 10-20 hours a week during the semester for the past year and a half. I've worked (and am still working with) students in a diversity of fields--nursing, English, psychology, anthropology, sociology, chemistry among others. During this time I have also taught many workshops on paper writing (planning, generating, revising), test taking, test preparation, reading difficult texts.

While I have many strengths, I want to be forthcoming with my weakness. Although I am certified to teach ESL and have some hours of experience doing so, I may not be the best person to come to with issues of spoken English. That being said, I work with many ESL students as part of my job now and I can happily and confidently say that I have seen (most importantly) their English and (also importantly) their language skills improve through diligent and ongoing effort.

With this is mind, my greatest strengths are the following (in no particular order): reading difficult texts, understanding professor / teacher expectations on assignments, writing (all parts of the process), reading and writing strategies, reducing complex arguments to simple components, and time management.

Furthermore, because of my undergraduate work in cognitive science (which required biology and neuroscience classes) I am at ease (which is not to say I don't find them challenging) reading these texts and, because I have overcome the challenge of reading such material on my own, am well equipped to help with reading textbooks, articles published in a journal, and articles published in magazines targeting educated lay-people (think Mind, Scientific American etc.).

Because I am still a student and hope to continue being a student (going for my PhD in 2016), I am well-acquainted with the struggle. My own work (I study the history of brain science and literature) is ongoing, I never stop learning and I never want to stop learning. My only caveat to my students is this: a tutor is not someone who sits down and quietly corrects your paper. A tutor is a teacher. If you want to work with me, our shared goal is advancing your skills, your confidence, and your work habits.

On a personal level, I am friendly, energetic, understanding, and I find almost everything I work with stimulating--in other words, I will get excited about what you are working on. I have some tutees that have been coming exclusively to see me for nearly 18 months now, and I hope that's because I am both a good tutor as well as someone who is pleasant to be around. I have worked almost exclusively with college-level students, teaching sophomores and juniors. However, I sincerely believe the basic skills of reading and writing transcend not only the boundaries of discipline, but also age and educational level: being able to read and write well is something that will serve you from the first grade all the way up through a dissertation defense.

Looking forward to working with you!
- Paul

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I graduated with a 3.9 GPA in English courses from the University of Massachusetts Boston. My day-to-day life consists of reading, writing, tutoring, and teaching--so, I essentially live and breath English as a discipline. I have extensive experience in paper writing (I have both presented papers are national conferences and won awards for papers within my university). Although I always see room for improvement within my own work, I consider myself very qualified in this area.

Proofreading

I spent 3 years working for a student newspaper in various editorial positions as well as managing editor. I also have taken professional writing courses a large portion of which emphasized proofreading. Also, being a writer of many papers, I have a great deal of undocumented experience.
