About Jesse

As an educator I have 5 years of experience teaching music performance and composition, and tutoring in related subjects. I have taught independently, at Yale University, through private music organizations, and through the Cleveland Institute of Music. My aim as an educator is to assist students in the assessment of their goals and to provide them with the tools needed to achieve them. I encourage my students to relate musical subjects to broader subjects of history and their own personal interests to facilitate a deeper and critical understanding of their environment and society.

My accomplishments as a composer have garnered funding from the National Society of Arts and Letters, the University of Michigan, Yale University, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the University of Lincoln, ASCAP, and the Rocky Ridge Music Center. My music has been performed by ensembles from Fifth House Ensemble and the Cleveland Chamber Symphony to performers such as Ransom Wilson and Andrew Williams, and can be heard on Cedille Records. The current season brings premiere performances at esteemed theaters in both Novosibirsk and St. Petersburg, Russia; as well as at the opening of a new performance space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

My passion for music and musical subjects and how they relate to the broader understanding of Western culture makes me an ideal tutor for those planning careers in music, as well as hobbyists with professional experience in other fields.

If interested, please do not hesitate to contact me to schedule a meeting.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I hold an undergraduate degree in composition from the Cleveland Institute of Music and a Master's degree in composition from the Yale School of Music. I have studied privately with Keith Fitch, Martin Bresnick, Aaron Jay Kernis, David Lang, and Hannah Lash. I have participated in masterclasses with Steven Stucky and Augusta Read Thomas and my work has been performed and recorded throughout the United States by professional ensembles.

Ear Training

My educational background as a composer, which includes an advanced degree in music, required me to take a number of courses and examinations in ear training. In addition to the various placement and graduation tests, I have taken courses in sight-singing, and harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic dictation. My work as a composer requires me to utilize ear training skills on a daily basis.

General Music

My extensive education as a composer (B.M. Cleveland Institute of Music 2013, M.M. Yale School of Music 2015) has given me strong knowledge of general music. I am proficient in all clefs, ranges and techniques of all instruments and their transpositions, arrangement, orchestration, computer music techniques, history, theory, keyboard skills, ear training, and analysis. I have learned these skills through general and applied music courses, as well as professional work in the field.

Guitar

I have performed as a guitarist for 13 years. I have studied classical guitar with Erik Mann and Jason Vieaux at the Cleveland Institute of Music. I have performed jazz and world music alongside legends such as Jamey Haddad and Alon Yavnai. Other styles performed include Blues, Rock, Hip-Hop, Funk, and Soul.

Music History

My educational background which includes a graduate degree in music composition has required me to pass general surveys of music history (ca. 900 A.D. to present). I have also been required to pass proficiency tests for admission, placement, and graduation purposes. My outlook on music history stems from my ability to relate major musical events with major events in western history (wars, political upheaval etc.).

Piano

As a trained and professionally working composer, I plan my work on the piano. I have taken piano lessons for 7 years and am capable of teaching beginning classical piano technique up to intermediate piano for adults wishing to learn popular music. My background also includes keyboard skills that can allow a student to gain understanding of aspects of music theory at the keyboard.

Public Speaking

My experience with public speaking stems from my background as a composer of classical music. I am required to give lengthy pre-concert talks about my own work to audiences of various sizes and age groups. Additionally, I am often required to speak in seminars and large classrooms. My background as a performer has provided me with a large set of skills to tackle anxiety before public speaking and/or performance.

Songwriting

My background in classical music composition (which includes two degrees) paired with my performance background in world music and jazz, provide me with the skills needed to coach songwriters. Education has provided me with extensive understand of the nature of song from the 18th century to present. Previous songwriting students have gone on to study in the songwriting major at the Berklee College of Music.
