About Kyle

I have extensive experience working with high school and college students. I've tutored and mentored in under-resourced areas of Los Angeles and Boston, and have years of experience working with non-native English speakers whose first languages include Chinese, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, French, and more. I completed a Master's degree in English (focuses in composition/rhetoric and American literature) in May 2015, and have taught writing and literature at two Boston-area colleges and composition at the #1 community college in the country. As of 8/5/15, I also hold an active MA teaching license for English (8-12).

Here's how I can help you: I tutor English (high school, college, and graduate level), creative writing, expository writing, AP English Language, AP English Literature, SAT Reading/Writing and GRE Analytical Writing. I offer patient and tailored guidance at all stages of the writing process— from brainstorming and research to organizing essays and grammar/proofreading.

I can help you become a better writer, test-taker, and student, all while having fun. I'm reliable, knowledgeable, and personable. What you will gain from working with me goes beyond technical skill; you'll gain confidence in your own abilities and insight into your own personal writing and thinking process.

Contact me any time and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. We can discuss scheduling and customize our lessons to suit your needs. I'm excited to work with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a B.A. in English with an emphasis in writing. I am currently completing an M.A. in English (May 2015).

ESL/ESOL

I have three years working with ESL students and one-on-one training through a University Writing Center.

Grammar

My writing center experience has prepared me well to tutor grammar. I have also worked as a book editor and copyeditor for independent clients and publishing houses for over two years.

Proofreading

My editing experience with academic publications, independent clients, and publishing houses has made me a great proofreader.

SAT Writing

I scored highly on the SAT writing (720) when I took the SAT myself. I have also since been formally trained in SAT preparation. I also scored a perfect 6.0 on the GRE analytical writing section. I am able to help with both the essay writing component (I have been trained in strategies for timed writing) and the multiple choice section.

Vocabulary

Having studied English at the graduate level and being a voracious reader, I have an extensive vocabulary that I'm excited to share with you! Additionally, I have studied Latin (three semesters as an undergraduate), which helps with identifying word roots. This will help me teach you how to better dissect vocabulary words and uncover meanings of words (even when you encounter words that are unfamiliar).

Writing

I have been a writer for my entire life. I am well versed in writing both creatively and critically/analytically, and I have studied writing at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. I have been employed as a professional writer, and I'm able to adapt to and work with a number of writing styles.
