In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I work with a program at my school called BUILD. Through it, I tutor students at a nearby elementary school that implements Common Core. Through BUILD, I am required to participate in several training sessions each semester to ensure that I am following the correct procedures.
I am currently employed by a elementary school tutoring program that runs through my college. I visit an elementary classroom (currently a third grade class) twice a week to assist mostly with literacy and math. I am instructed on procedure by both the teacher of the class and the program through which I work (BUILD). In addition, I have previously tutored first and second grade students independently.
