Throughout my entire life, I have been known to curl up with a book. Snooping about a gold-laden cave with Bilbo Baggins; tut-tutting next to Nick Carraway while his acquaintances get up to all manner of no-good; going to war with Achilles and Petroklos are childhood memories looked upon with fondness. These days, I love to share this same passion with young students while balancing my own assignments: I study at NYU, in the class of 2018, and have adored the challenges and tribulations of college. Currently, I'm undecided on my major, but suspect that I might be going into politics or international relations.
I have helped tutor my classmates well back into middle school, and would often spend time after school helping my peers and their friends with difficult assignments and proofreading. This habit has continued all throughout high school: even today I go over papers with my classmates, and focus especially on style of writing and the use of resources in arguments. I would love to work with people of all age groups, and am so excited to help younger children with their handwriting and vocabulary skills; not to mention the young high school hopefuls working on improving their SAT scores (particularly with writing and critical reading). In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I personally received a 780 on SAT critical reading. This is because I enjoy defining elements of a piece of writing and then critically examining it for meaning. This is a skill I have shared with my peers and students for years, teaching them to analyze information and mark their text so as to best refine the information they have in their text. This works especially well with a timed testing environment, but can also be used for analyzing readings for classes, and even casual reading.
Not only did I pass the SAT writing section with a 670, I also helped my classmates with their practice tests to improve their scores. I also tutored underclassmen with their writing skills to ensure that they would be able to write efficiently while also perfecting their arguments. Those two skills are crucial to doing well on the SAT writing test, as it is timed.
Since a very young age, I have been told that I have an excellent vocabulary. For years I have helped fellow students with broadening their English lexicon, and subsequently aided them in best using their fresh reservoir of information to write and speak in a persuasive manner. I personally prefer to focus on Latin and Greek roots of words, making the act of learning vocabulary an exercise in fitting meanings together, rather than reading off a list by rote.
