University of Connecticut (Biomedical Engineering)
Tufts University School of Medicine (Enrolled)
Hello! My name is James. I have a B.S. in biomedical engineering from the University of Connecticut, graduating magna cum laude from the Honors Program. I'm currently a medical student in Boston.
Experience: I have been tutoring for over nine years with focuses in math and science. I have experience tutoring students as young as 6 years old to college students. I've worked in a university-run tutoring center (UConn Q-Center), providing services in physics and calculus. I can also provide piano lessons as I have been professionally trained for over 11 years in classical piano.
My Method: When tutoring, I don't coach students through their work but allow their minds to explore the problem and creative problem solving techniques. Mechanistic routine may help for a single exam but does not benefit in the long run. My style encourages the student to pause and think critically, teaching them to become resourceful and versatile. My process produces immediate results while fostering concept-driven learning. I will work hard to get you or your child to a position of success but I should stress that you'll need to meet me halfway! Let's work together and get those grades up!
Please note: as a policy I always meet in a public area for at least the first lesson (typically the nearest library). If more private instruction is required please let me know and we can work out details to ensure a safe and professional environment. Hello! My name is James. James is super helpful and friendly! He will always work around your schedule and is willing to meet any requests! I had him as a tutor and he really helped explain all concepts thoroughly and with confidence. If there was ever a topic he was unsure of, he would research it that night and send an email explaining it in detail. I highly recommend his tutoring skills and I couldn't have gotten through calculus without him!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a degree in biomedical engineering with a minor in electrical engineering. Relevant courses include: university level physics, electrical circuits, biomedical engineering measurements, engineering electromagnetics, digital fundamentals, and bioinstrumentation. Three of these courses included a complementary hardware design component. Additionally my senior capstone project was in the system realization of a breast cancer imaging system.
I have been trained professionally for 11 years by a master's graduate from the Manhattan School of Music. I have performed in concerts every year throughout my formal grade school education. Additionally, I have participated in five benefit concerts that have raised money towards causes that include: genocide prevention in Darfur, providing mosquito netting to the people in the Amazon Jungle, and lastly providing basic necessities for the impoverished in Bridgeport, CT. I am familiar with the works of Chopin (my specialty), Schubert, Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Liszt, and many more.
