University of Notre Dame (Architecture)
Boston College (Graduate Coursework)
Though I may be young, I believe that it is through hard work and unyielding fortitude that will let a person accomplish their goals. I graduated four years ago from the University of Notre Dame's School of Architecture, with minors in Theology and Furniture Design. Since that time, I have had a myriad of experience working in fields ranging from food service, education, design work, independent contracting, etc.
I spent two years teaching at Boston College High School on subjects related to art while I completed graduate work at Boston College. Prior to that, I worked at Regis Jesuit High School in Denver. Though I have the most experience teaching and working with students of middle and high school ages, I was an all-around good student in both high school and college and am comfortable in many areas.
Currently, I am an intern architect and am working toward my professional license. I am a driven and conscientious worker, detail-oriented and methodical. Thus, I will bring the same level of service to my tutoring.
In my experience, I find that no two people will learn the same way as I did or another has. The best way to tutor is to explain to students the reason for their learning. I think that when students lose sight of the big picture and try instead engage in rote memorization, they become disinterested and disillusioned, and as a result, they learn less and do not perform as well. Even in high school, I saw students slowly go through the motions of regurgitation rather than critically engaging themselves.
I promise that I will be try my best to make learning engaging and important for students. If you are interested, please contact me! Though I may be young, I believe that it is through hard work and unyielding fortitude that will let a person accomplish their goals. I am an architecture undergrad and I had this project which I had no clue how to do. I asked for Thien's help, and I have to say that it was an excellent choice. He came prepared with books and notes concerning my project and was very patient when it came to me not understanding some points. I would totally recommend Thien to a prospective student or a tutee.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 2009. It is a professional 5 year degree. I currently am working in an architecture firm and am engaged in design work.
I have a minor in Theology from the University of Notre Dame and have taught theology at the high school level, with an emphasis on the Scripture.
I taught Photography courses at the high school level for two years, with students going on to compete in the Scholastic New England competition in Photography each year. I own some cameras and have traveled across the world, adding to my own knowledge and collection. Furthermore, I sometimes freelance as a photographer as well for clients.
I have been an educator and instructor for the past three years. During that time, I have presented lectures on a variety of subjects ranging from theological studies to the history of art and photography. To prepare for such lectures, I find that research is inherently valuable as well as determining the amount of information to present to an audience.
My professional work requires me to present architectural projects in front of panels and juries as well as local communities. As such, I have learned how to communicate ideas in a persuasive and concise manner. To prepare for such events, I believe that preparation is key as well as practice. I have written speeches and drafted arguments when presenting a case for a project, which I believe is inherently useful.
I believe that public speaking requires planning and forethought as well as critical self-evaluation. That is why I have recorded my speeches ahead of time and am able to critique and dissect issues with body language as well as tones. I believe that similar methods would also be helpful when teaching others the finer points of oratory.
