I have taught in a Kumon Learning Center for English and Math to elementary and middle-school aged kids for 2 years and am fully trained in those subjects. I have taken math classes at Stanford University and am currently attending Boston College. I also have tutored in science (biology and chemistry) at the high school level.
I scored in the 90th percentile on my SAT years ago and have tutored students who were very successful on their test.
I specialize in teaching elementary aged children in English/Reading/Writing and Math, as well as Math at higher levels. I assign homework to be done in between tutoring sessions to ensure that you can understand it on your own and then review it at the beginning of the next lesson to correct any mistakes.
I will travel and meet with students anywhere easily accessible by the T. Engaging, patient, and hardworking tutor. Always prepared, prompt and professional. Makes sure the work is done and the preparation is of high standard. Excellent communication skills too!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took two semesters of Anatomy last year at Boston College and received A's in both classes. I tutored fellow students to help them pass. My Anatomy classes both incorporated lab work so I have hands-on knowledge of what the body looks like in physical pieces after examination of parts such as bones and organs. I have dissected many different animals in labs and also have extensive knowledge of physiology to help understand Anatomy better.
I taught elementary aged children in Kumon for two years. Ages ranged from pre-school to middle school, with most falling in 1st to 5th grade. I have a lot of experience motivating the children and getting even the most bored or distracted kids to focus and try their hardest. I know how to talk and act in a way that children connect to and understand.
I have taught elementary math through Kumon for 2 years. I also tutored a few elementary students independently. I have been gone through training in elementary math instruction. I have had students go from failing to getting A's after taking lessons from me.
I work on handwriting by having the students copy letters on a lined page to first understand how to write the letter and then to understand how to write it smaller and next to other letters. I also work with students on spacing between words. Once print handwriting is good, we move on to cursive. I have worked at a learning center teaching young children how to write for many years.
I worked with a Kumon Learning Center teaching young children phonics. I used flashcards of letters and pictures in categorized packs to help them understand how sounds work. I also underwent instruction in phonics myself as a child so I understand it from the students' point of view as well.
I have been tutoring in high school level math for 5 years. I tend to do a practice test to see what level a student is at and what areas need improvement and then put a focus there. I start from basics and move up when a student doesn't understand something. This is because many SAT questions are based on utilizing base knowledge and manipulating a question, so I believe it is more important to understand the equations rather than simply memorize them. I scored in the 90th percentile on my SAT and attended Stanford for mathematics.
My method for tutoring in reading and English skills includes learning new vocabulary, usually via flashcards, learning to summarize information after each paragraph, and skimming for key phrases. I want all of my students to read quickly and proficiently so they can perform well on a timed and lengthy test like the SAT. I scored in the 90th percentile on my SAT.
I worked in Kumon for two years teaching reading/writing/English. I helped students write better essays of various kinds. I would edit the papers and return it to them with feedback on how to properly organize sentences to make an effective argument. I have also edited papers in college, philosophical, argumentative, research/medical, short stories, etc.
