About Ryan

Hi! My name is Ryan, and I am a sophomore at Northeastern University, where I study a combination of International Affairs and Arabic in preparation for a career in diplomacy and foreign affairs abroad. My strengths are in writing, test preparation and English Literature, and I enjoy helping others develop the same love of the English Language that I have.

Some quick credentials: my aggregate SAT score is 2310, with an 800 in Critical Reading and a 790 in Writing. I currently have a 3.4 GPA/QPA and consistently receive A grades in essays. My AP exams (In English Literature and in U.S. History) both received a "5" and my SAT IIs in those same subjects received scores of 760 and 770, respectively. On the basis of my public speaking and writing ability, and with no previous experience in the International Relations Council, I was selected to go to both the Regional and National competitions with Northeastern's Model Arab League Travel Team, which is regularly #1 in the nation. I write for fun daily and know many strategies to improve a student's relationship with his or her writing ability.

My teaching style is relaxed and friendly, because I want above all to make my students comfortable with their subjects. With writing, I at first ask students to bring examples of their work, both pieces they are proud of and ones they are not, and I spend time with them identifying strengths and areas for improvement. My goal is to help them develop their voice, whether on paper or out loud.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I am well-versed in Greek/Roman, Egyptian, Norse, and Arthurian mythology, which is an invaluable resource for understanding English literature from any point in the past millennium. In addition, I have experience in both reading/evaluating Shakespearean and Chaucerian works in their original forms and can help shed light on some of the more obscure terms and references they include (what DOES "trow" mean, anyway? It means to believe, presume or suppose!) Finally, I am very familiar with the works of Dickens, Doyle, Howard, Salinger, Fitzgerald, Maugham, Vonnegut, and other literary giants of the last two centuries, and will eagerly help any student wanting to understand their assigned reading or to--hopefully--find other books by that author.

I'm certified by WyzAnt to teach English, grammar, vocabulary, writing, and half-a-dozen other subjects indirectly related to essay composition, which are listed on my profile. I also have a lot of experience writing papers in both high school and college, so I understand the rules around things like citation, proper formatting, etc. in addition to generic writing help, I almost always get A's on papers, and I know what an A paper looks like and how to craft it.

I have a good deal of experience working with ESL as a peer mentor or tutor. My home life involves ESL; I have grown up in the role of teacher to my younger sibling, who takes an ESL program in high school and frequently reads with me at home for it. In addition, I have worked in a bilingual school as a teacher's assistant, and spent a year helping young children develop their ESL skills.

I was and am an A student in humanities classes through high school and in college (I am a sophomore at Northeastern). My SATs were slightly lopsided in favor of English-language skills, with an 800 in Critical Reading and a 790 in Writing. I currently write for an independent news outlet and am active in the administration of several clubs where regular newsletters, research topics and general writing skills are absolutely necessary. I am familiar with teaching writing, and I work by inspiring students to love writing.

SAT Reading

My SAT superscore (which is what the colleges see!) was 2310. I received an 800 in Critical Reading and a 790 in Writing, as well as a 720 in Math, after taking the test no more than twice. To give a sense of how much study habits made a difference, I received a 2170 on the PSAT in sophomore year--before I developed and learned the system of SAT test taking--and the resulting 140-point improvement is due to that system, which, again, can be taught to anybody.

In addition, I am qualified by WyzAnt to teach English, specifically Writing, Vocabulary, Spelling and Grammar, all of which will make a difference in the reading and writing portions of the SAT.

SAT Writing

I received a 790 on the Writing portion of the SAT. My strengths in tutoring are grounded in the humanities, specifically writing, literature and the English language, and my interests flow from that.
