Oberlin College (Africana Studies)
I hope to share with each of my tutees, or as I prefer, peers in education my love for learning. I recently walked the stage at the rigorous Oberlin College receiving a degree in Africana Studies, but, I think the most important thing about me that you should know is that I love to learn. I went to a public high school and this love qualified me to attend one of the best private liberal arts colleges in the nation on scholarship. Learning is not necessarily something I do because I want to get something or go somewhere. Learning is something I do because I recognize that ideas are the foundation of what exists. There would be naught in the world but for some entity turning some idea into a creation. Everything around me from a chair to a pillowcase, a cradle to a lamp was at one time or another an idea. It is education that inspires us to create a new reality.
I'm a right-brained person. I'm extremely creative, clever and gifted with languages, art, music, dance and poetry. I speak Portuguese, Spanish, English and some Mandarin Chinese, spent 6 months in Brazil, and have a sensitivity to international issues. I love languages and am extremely determined. I taught myself Portuguese and qualified for a scholarship for minority students to help visit Brazil. There I was able to experience life in the city of Salvador da Bahia and if called upon to teach this language can do in a variety of manners utilizing multiple ways of aiding a student to learn be it with dance, music, art, math problems, or any other thing which meets the students interests.
I also have had to heal within myself difficulties with ADD/ADHD so I greatly sympathise with students that have been diagnosed with the disorder and will work by any means necessary to see that the student is propelled to wherever it is they are meant to go. I will work with parents, and if needed doctors, to help those trying to learn do so in an environment that is most conducive to their needs and will work well to their particular abilities. I thank you so much for reading this, and wish you a blessed day. I hope to share with each of my tutees, or as I prefer, peers in education my love for learning. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I studied Africana Studies with a concentration in Fine Arts at Oberlin College where I studied under the world-traveled Ralph J. who will soon teach at Spelman. I have played cello since high school and in my last semester at Oberlin played dozens of concerts. I am a working musician and have impressed some elders in my community who have heard the likes of Coltrane.
I have been trained and still work with the system of theory and ear training devised by W. A. Mathieu. I have worked with this system for the past year and have found it to greatly enhance my musical perception. I was passed to me by my musical mentor Ralph J.
