If you are looking for a knowledgeable, patient, and reliable tutor in a variety of subjects, you have found the right person! My name is Kelsey, and I would love to help you increase your understanding of History, the Ancient World, Latin, English grammar, or even the SATs! I graduated from Hamilton College in upstate New York with a double major in Classical Languages and History. In the past, I have tutored Latin, Ancient Greek, and math, and am also able to help with test preparation for the SATs (I scored a 760 on the writing and 750 on the reading portions when I took the test). A basic level of understanding of Latin and Greek vocabulary can be really helpful for the vocabulary sections of the SAT, so I am well qualified to tutor for SAT prep and English vocabulary or Roots classes. In college, I was a TA for Latin I and II, and did private tutoring for upper level Latin. I am interested in becoming a Latin or Social Studies teacher in the future, and am hoping that tutoring can help me keep up my skills. I am also a very good writer and am happy to teach writing techniques and grammar, to proofread drafts of essays and papers, or to prepare for state tests in history or English. I am accepting students who live in the Boston area and are accessible by the T, and are available on weeknights after 7pm and/or on weekends. I look forward to meeting you! Kelsey was very patient and pleasant with my son. She interacted with him in a easy going, yet persuasive manner. She allowed him to think on his own but was there to guide him through the process of his work (his right answers and his wrong answers).
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I majored in History at Hamilton College, focusing on American History during the Civil War and Reconstruction eras. I wrote my honors thesis on African American education during Reconstruction, and also took classes on the Old South and World Wars I and II. I also took both AP American History and AP European History in high school, so am familiar with the content of those classes and all areas of American History as well.
I was a honors level Classical Languages major at Hamilton College, and took several Classical History courses as part of that major. I focused primarily on Roman History, but also have some experience in Greek History, Greek Philosophy, and Egyptian History. I also studied abroad in Rome for one semester and visited Athens, so I have visited many of the ancient buildings and monuments there. I even wrote my college honors thesis on how characters in Clint Eastwood movies use a similar heroic structure as Achilles in the Iliad, so I can help make the Classics accessible and relevant to you or your student!
I studied abroad in Rome, Italy, for several months and took two years of Italian in college. I also know several similar languages, including Spanish and Latin, so I understand a lot about linguistics, which will help me explain the language to you in a way that is simple and easy to apply.
I majored in Classical Languages with an emphasis in Latin at Hamilton College, and studied Latin for 10 years. I was a TA for Latin I and II, and have tutored through upper level college classes. I have used Ecce and Wheelocks to learn and to teach, but am able to adapt to any textbook you or your student is using. I am happy to reexplain topics, work through extra texts or sentences, and practice vocabulary and pronunciation. For Latin practice, I generally drill concepts and have students work through true texts (Virgil, Ovid, Cicero, etc) to emphasize those concepts.
I am a very good test taker and have practiced organizational techniques to structure my study sessions and keep myself organized throughout the year to ensure that I am in the best possible place. I have taken a few study skills courses and know a bit about techniques that help with memorizing. I also am currently a teacher who works with the multiple intelligences approach, and understand how to work with and help students with various learning styles.
