Using skills that I have developed while teaching, tutoring, and working in the financial industry, I can help you improve your understanding of important math concepts. Instead of just memorizing formulas and equations, I will help you make connections to your prior knowledge and to real-world applications. Once your self-confidence increases, I think that you also will find that math can be fun and powerful.
In addition to improving your math knowledge, I can help you achieve better results on homework, exams, and standardized tests by helping you with organization and time-management.
I have a flexible schedule and can meet you at your convenience during days, evenings, or on weekends. I have easy access to the T and Hubway and can meet you where ever they go.
I recently changed careers from being in the investment industry to teaching and tutoring math because I believe that for most people happiness and success in today's world require strong math skills. I have always had fun with math and I am disappointed when I hear people say, "I'm not good at math". I believe that most people are much better at math than they think they are. They just need a passionate, caring, creative, and patient person like me who can help them overcome their fears and discover the joy and usefulness of math. Using skills that I have developed while teaching, tutoring, and working in the financial industry, I can help you improve your understanding of important math concepts. Jim has been extremely helped with preparing me for the GMAT. He teaches the material in a very effective way.
We reviewed a recent test and discussed a variety of topics including why GDP measures final goods and services (to avoid double counting), the difference between gross and net investment (depreciation), how price floors can create surpluses, price ceilings can create shortages, while neither exist at equilibria.
Covered probability & rate/work problems--we covered additional problems beyond my GMAT textbook problems, which were helpful to me. Jim was able to break things down and offer additional explanation.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Many students that struggle with Algebra 1 do so because they have difficulty with abstract thinking, thus I will help you improve your underlying math skills.
One of the good things about Algebra 1 is that you can usually check your answers, so I will help you develop techniques that will lead to fewer careless errors and improved problem-solving skills.
I can help you achieve success in Algebra 2!
In addition to teaching and tutoring Algebra 2 students, I have taught and tutored Algebra 1 and Precalculus students, so I will be able tie the concepts to material that you have already seen and show you why the concepts are important for future studies.
I will also help you work on filling any gaps that you have in your math foundation that may be contributing to your challenges in Algebra 2.
I will also teach you techniques that you can use to catch and learn from your mistakes.
I can help you understand and apply economic concepts so that you will succeed in you class and gain insights into how and why companies and governments act as they do.
In addition to majoring in Economics and Finance at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and earning a CFA, I spent many years using my economic and financial knowledge to manage stock portfolios for JP Morgan and Putnam Investments.
I can help you achieve success in the Quantitative Section of the GMAT!
In addition to my own success in math, I have had success tutoring and teaching students in the subjects covered in the test. Because I have worked with students with varying proficiency in math, I have used different methods to explain and clarify concepts. Together we can find the approach that will work best for you.
I will also teach you techniques and problem-solving skills that you can use to be a better test-taker.
I can help you achieve success in Precalculus!
I have taught and tutored Precalculus students with varying proficiency in math, so I am familiar with the difficulties that many students face. I have also used different methods to explain and clarify concepts.
In addition to explaining the material, I will help you make connections to concepts that you saw in other classes as well as show you why the concepts are important.
I can help you succeed in the Math section of the SAT!
I have taught and tutored all of the material covered on the test, so I know the challenges that you and others face. Since every student is unique, each lesson will be customized to meet your specific needs.
In addition to explaining and clarifying important concepts, I'll teach you how to overcome the challenges created by the time constraint on the test. Some techniques are specific to the Math SAT exam while others are problem-solving skills that you will be able to use in other situations.
