I am graduating in May 2016 with a Masters in Education (International Education Policy) from Harvard Graduate School of Education. In 2015, I graduated with a Masters in Sociology with a focus on social psychology from the University of Maryland.
Before entering graduate school, I spent two years teaching 1st grade at a successful Connecticut charter school, and I was certified in elementary general education. I believe that learning, particularly for elementary students, should be exciting and fun, so I am committed to bringing enthusiasm and creativity to my approach as a tutor. I am able to collect and use student data to diagnose misunderstandings and develop targeted learning plans in order to help students improve and reach their individual learning goals.
I have expertise in teaching/tutoring all elementary subjects, with an emphasis on reading and math. I also have experience working with students with special needs, including ADD/ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and emotional disorders. All of my students in 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 finished the year at or above grade level in reading and math.
I graduated from Kenyon College with a B.A. in psychology and classics. I have tutored college-level psychology, and I worked as a sociology teaching assistant at the undergraduate level for two years at the University of Maryland, College Park. I also have experience with successful SAT, Praxis, and GRE test preparation. I am graduating in May 2016 with a Masters in Education (International Education Policy) from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Megan has been working with our 9 year old son who struggles with writing and spelling. When she works with him she makes the learning fun. He looks forward to working with Megan. We have seen an improvement in his school work and most importantly in his confidence.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a Teach for America corps member, and was certified by the state of Connecticut as an Elementary K-6 teacher to teach from 2010-2012. I have taught 1st grade for two years in New Haven at a successful charter school. I also completed graduate level education courses at Southern Connecticut State University.
As a first grade teacher, I taught beginning phonics to students for two years. I received a high score on the Foundations of Reading examination required for teaching certification in Connecticut. I have a strong understanding of the concepts and teaching methods necessary to help students develop phonics skills.
