About Leo

I am an accomplished writer as well as a professional teacher and visual artist. I will prepare customized lessons for each tutoring session to match your needs, and work with you to devise an overall strategy to meet your learning objectives. I offer support in the following areas: English Language Arts; SAT Reading, Writing and Essay; and Visual Art.
I undertook advanced critical reading and writing studies at the University of Chicago, where I won the Feitler Prize for Outstanding Undergraduate Work, awarded for the best-written Art History thesis. I approach writing as a logical and a creative process, a tool for making clear arguments and expressing subtle thoughts. I can assist with grammar and organization, as well as help develop your command of vocabulary and your voice as a writer. I have a deep knowledge of reading comprehension, especially analysis of literature and critical writing. Whether you are refining your essay-writing technique or learning English as a second language, I will tailor our sessions to give you confidence as a reader and writer.
My credentials for SAT tutoring include working for a professional tutoring service based in Los Angeles; a position as a High School SAT Coach and Tutor Trainer; and a score of 800 on the SAT Verbal section. As an experienced SAT tutor, I teach to the test and provide the strategies you will need to analyze different types of Reading and Writing questions, manage your time, and perform at your best on test day. Remember: what the SAT tests is how well you can take the SAT... not how much you know! I will make test prep into a fun challenge, and as I get to know your learning style I will customize and focus our lessons, so you build more and more competence leading up to the test. Let's beat that test!
For Visual Art, I have 8+ years’ experience as an art teacher, and I am also a professional artist exhibiting in Boston galleries. I enjoy teaching art as much as I love making it! My own primary media are drawing, painting and printmaking. Whatever your interests or goals are we can work together to come up with fun and engaging lessons to help you build your repertoire. In the past I’ve integrated visits to Boston’s great museums into my lessons, and I can also point you towards the right materials to use. If you are interested in art history, I can build lessons about artists and styles into our time to make connections with the techniques we are learning.
Thank You for reading my profile – I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Photoshop

I have 8+ years of experience using Adobe Photoshop and am well versed in CS5. Additionally, I completed a Photoshop-based course in New Media at the Art Institute of Boston. I use the program frequently for graphic design, photo-editing, digital painting, and preparing high quality images for printing. I have a lot of experience troubleshooting, and in particular designating appropriate settings and file types for printing and transferring files to and from other programs, such as Illustrator and video editing software.

Art History

I majored in Art History as an undergrad at University of Chicago, and my senior thesis received the Feitler Prize for Best Undergraduate Art History Writing. I also studied art history while earning my Art Education Master's degree from Lesley University, and I continue to read and research art history while planning lessons as an art teacher, as well as for my own continued interest.

Drawing

As a professional art teacher and artist, I spend a lot of time drawing and thinking about the best ways to teach this skill! I have taught beginning students how to draw portraits, realistic three-dimesional forms, and landscapes, as well as more abstract and experimental forms of drawing. Since I also specialize in Art History I augment drawing lessons by introducing students to artists and artworks to study.

Painting

As a professional art teacher and artist, I spend a lot of time painting and thinking about the best ways to teach this skill. I have painted professionally for many years and been commissioned to paint portraits, murals and figurative work. I have taught beginning students the essentials of brush technique, volume and shading, color mixing, and composition. Since I also specialize in Art History, I augment painting lessons by introducing students to artists and artworks to study.

Proofreading

The art of clear, convincing prose is one of my greatest passions, and I find teaching it enormously rewarding. I can help students with outlining, organization, refining their language and expository style, as well as with grammar and proofreading. My greatest expertise lies in literary and art historical analysis.

To give you some of my credentials: at the University of Chicago, my writing won the Art History department's award for best undergraduate thesis; I have peer-edited graduate level writing; I have tutored the SAT II Literature Test in addition to the SAT I; and I have helped students studying English poetry and prose as a second language.

I look forward to helping you become a more elegant writer!

Reading

Critical Reading and Writing are my strongest overall tutoring areas along with Art and Art History. Former SAT students have demonstrated great improvements in their abilities to efficiently analyze passages and apply relevant information, using context, inference and answer strategies. Though test-style reading is an important skill, I also take pride in imparting to students the kinds of close reading and analytical skills that will carry over into core subjects, and prepare them for college level reading and writing.

Study Skills

As part of my teaching career, I have extensive experience as a tutor and homework mentor with high school students. I have worked with many students to develop personalized study plans which allow them to use their strengths to full advantage. Study plans help students see their own working methods, such as how they best take notes on long passages or rewrite math equations. They also hold students accountable for their own work, and allow them to see their progress over time.
