I believe that an immersive experience is important for students to become familiar with a language and to gain confidence to express themselves so I encourage maximum foreign language use during my instruction time. Depending on language proficiency, I will provide students with various foreign language source material in print and online for us to discuss and review at subsequent sessions.
I have been teaching Spanish professionally for approximately ten years at various foreign language institutes (in Athens) and privately as a tutor. I have prepared students for the Spanish Language entrance exam at the University of Athens and for the Instituto Cervantes' language proficiency exams. More recently, as part of my PhD program, I have taught Spanish at the university level and through community outreach organizations I have volunteered to teach Spanish with urban high-school aged youth and active seniors.
I am a native Greek speaker with a passion for studying and teaching languages, particularly Spanish. I began learning Spanish while still in Athens at the Instituto Cervantes, an organization founded by the Government of Spain to promote the study of the Spanish language and Spanish and Hispanic culture. Subsequently, I studied Spanish Language and Literature at the University of Athens, Greece and graduated with a bachelor's degree. At the University of Athens the faculty was made up of native Spanish speakers from Spain and Latin America and non-native speakers from Greece and other European countries, which exposed me to a variety of Spanish dialects. After I graduated from the University of Athens I became an examiner for the Instituto Cervantes and I enrolled in a teacher education program at the Hellenic American University in Athens focusing on Teaching Modern Greek as a Second/Foreign Language. I earned my masters degree in Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language from the Universidad Internacional Menéndez Pelayo and I am currently enrolled as a PhD candidate in Spanish Literature at Boston University. I believe that an immersive experience is important for students to become familiar with a language and to gain confidence to express themselves so I encourage maximum foreign language use during my instruction
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
