About Ken

I am an experienced investment industry professional and I have my MBA from Northeastern. I work with candidates to pass the FINRA securities licensing exams. I also tutor in business subjects including financial accounting. I also help young professionals with career development, and HS students with study skills, writing and the college application process. Discounts for online sessions up to 20%.

My professional background includes seven years at Fidelity Investments, two years at the DE Shaw Group, six years at Athena Capital Advisors, and I am currently a Director at a wealth management firm in Waltham. I have worked in broker/dealer operations, RIA operations, investment sales, and I have been part of investment technology startups.

My teaching style for quantitative subjects (finance, accounting) focuses on learning and understanding the fundamentals of a subject, and how it relates to real-world practices, including the corporate world and one's own personal financial management.

I have worked with young adults both as a mentor and as a tutor. I have mentored students in Acton (MA) and Little Rock (AR) through Big Brothers, and also through The John Andrew Mazie Memorial Foundation (Framingham Mass High School). I worked as a tutor with One with One in Boston, which matches adults with students from other countries. I worked with a young man from India who was new to the U.S. and was starting college.

I am energetic and enjoy seeing students succeed and achieve their goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Accounting

I have experience with tutoring in all financial accounting, corporate finance and investment accounting concepts - both in theory and in real-life applications. Finance and accounting courses were taken both at the undergrad (Providence College) and graduate school levels (Northeastern).

Business

I have a degree in Business Management from Providence College, and I am halfway through my first year in the MBA program at Northeastern University. I have 20 years of business operations and management experience with large firms such as Fidelity Investments, and spent 10 years of my career with startup ventures with JP Morgan, DE Shaw, Athena Capital Advisors LLC and Curian Capital LLC. I am currently acting CFO with AutoFlex / Clean Cities in Baltimore, a firm launching car sharing services using alternative-fueled vehicles, including electric cars.

Career Development

I have extensive experience working with professionals and college seniors with career development, resumes, networking, and the job interview process. I focus on those interested in pursuing a career in Financial Services, leveraging my experience in advisory services, investment management, investment technology and brokerage operations.

I have 15+ years' experience within investment firms, recruiting, training and developing young professionals, helping them to define their personal and professional objectives and achieve their goals.

I also have 3 years of experience consulting with individuals and entrepreneurs with career development issues, examining their goals and interests, developing resumes or business plans.

College Counseling

I have 4+ years experience working with high school students on the college application process, including resume development, essay writing and interviewing. I have extensive business and academic writing skills - from 20+ years in the wealth management industry and from the last two years in the Northeastern MBA program. I am familiar with admissions requirements and the best evaluation methods for NE schools, national schools and UK-based universities.

Series 63

Licensed FINRA Series 65 currently. Previously held the Series 7, 24 (General Securities Principal) and 4 (Options Principal securities licenses).

Series 7

I have been tutoring the Series 7 for over four years. I have extensive brokerage and investment advisory operations, sales and management experience. I am currently FINRA Series 65 licensed, as well as being previously Series 7, 24 (General Securities Principal), and 4 (Options Principal) licensed. I have worked in B/D operations and RIA operations, and have managed securities trading for different firms. My approach is to concentrate on concepts the student needs the most help with, and use multiple learning resources other than the study manual to ensure success.

A good first meeting

Ken and I mapped out a basic framework for my studies over the next 3 months and I now have a place to start. He shared some good resources and was able to explain something to me that I've been struggling with for several weeks.
